I'm going w/ hiring Cubit as an interim was dumber. Sure, the school was in a tough situation and seemingly had to do it but firing him now is not necessarily a disaster. A lame-duck coach does you no favors. Better to cut the offending organ now instead of letting it fester. Putting together a staff might be difficult but maybe Whitman already has one in mind. I'm guessing that the next coach will be from a lower level school and will bring much of his staff with him.

The Bucs still owe $10 million. Anything Illinois were to give him would just be icing. This is one of those hirings that will bring Illinois some name recognition, but that might be about it. He's 20 years removed from his last stint in college as a DB coach at tOSU. Not so sure he'll be gung-ho on the recruiting and dealing with donors, but you never know. You'd have to think that the NFL would come calling in 2017 or 2018.
