If you’re struggling figuring it out, I can help.  The NJ Devils sent out a letter to season ticket holders covering changes for that season.  In the letter they acknowledged that the song was a long standing tradition for the Devils.  However, they did not want to even have the potential of giving off the impression they were unsympathetic in any way to the victims of the types of crimes he committed - as a result they were going to discontinue its use.  From the perspective of the team, the potential hit to their brand image was not worth the risk of continuing use of the song.  I’m certain Syracuse feels the same way, they do not want to damage their brand.  Because the percentage of people who can make the connection between the song, the artist, and his crimes is much, much, much higher than the 2% of the population you suggest.

And while Syracuse hasn’t come out and said anything as explicitly as the Devils did (that I know of, that letter was only sent to Devils season ticket holders) - I’m sure Syracuse administrators would have the same opinion.  So as a final question - what kind of fan would you be if the team you claim to support told you “please don’t ask us to play this song, because we’re concerned doing so will hurt our brand”?

My answer would be “not a very good one”.  So if it’s still necessary, I’ll ask on behalf of Syracuse University - please stop pushing for the band to restart the use of the hey song, because it could damage the brand of the school and the teams you support.
