Preface: You can tell I am a Syracuse fan with this move...

Well, football season is two weeks underway here in North Carolina. Our varsity team should be 2-0 going into tonight's matchup, but lost a very tough game last week 28-27. I've said before, I coach linebackers and defensive line for our varsity team, but have been really excited that I was named defensive coordinator for our JV Squad (my first time in a coordinator role). I'm having an absolute blast with it, but made my first coaching mistake last night...

We were playing a team that was just flat out bigger, faster, and stronger than us in last nights JV contest. A team that runs the ball 80% of the time (with about 60% of those runs being toss sweeps - thanks for the breakdown info HUDL!). We've repped it countless times over the past week in practice. Here's how the first sequences of our game went:

1st defensive series - play 1 - Toss Sweep to the left - 65 yard TD run
1st offensive series - 4 and out - Punt
2nd defensive series - play 1 - Toss Sweet to the right - 55 yard TD run
2nd offensive series - play 1 - fumbled exchange between QB & RB - Defensive return for a TD

In 4 minutes, our squad is down 21-0. This being said, JV boys are still trying to learn the game of football, so there's a delicate line between teaching and ripping them a new one. The one problem I am facing is that 60% of the team isn't physical and lack the willingness to throw a punch back after they get punched in the jaw. Here's where my mistake happens..

We are now in the 2nd quarter. The score is getting quite out of hand. There's a storm coming into the area and my trainer informs me that lightning is coming our way and the game is going to be called as soon as it occurs. My defense is out on the field and actually doing much better after me lighting into them. We stop them on 3rd down at the 50 yard line to create a 4th and 10. I expect them to bring their punt team out, but they line up like they are going for it. I call a TO to get my defense ready, in the meantime, I'm pretty pissed off that they are up XX to 0 in the 2nd quarter and are planning on going for it on 4th and 10. (Note: pretty pissed is an understatement - I have a bit of a temper - you see where this is going). Play resumes and they run their toss sweep (surprise-surprise), except they streak their WR down the field and try to execute a HB Pass. My OLB make a great play, get's off the block, and makes a TFL in the backfield. What do you think I do? In none other than Scott Shafer style:

I actually took off my headset in the process of it. I admittedly lost my temper, which I know as a coach I have to control, and their coach on the other sideline witnessed my gesture and pointed his finger at me, approached me when the game was called and had some choice words. While he didn't accept my apology, I'll learn from it. He came out looking like the bigger *AHole* when he challenged me to some activities in the parking lot. IMO - when you're up that big and run a trick play like that, it's disrespectful, especially in JV ball, so it may have been a halfhearted apology. Just thought some members of our beloved community would enjoy a semi-humorous story from a 1st year defensive coordinator coaching in the highest classification in North Carolina.

Tonight our varsity team is playing a RB who has offers from schools all around the country. Recently named a top 7 which included Ohio State, among others. He runs a 4.38 40 yard dash. No Biggie. I'll post updates from time to time, because so many people have reached out to me about the team via PM. Hopefully we can pull the upset tonight!

As always - Go Orange!

Live and learn. Thanks for sharing your story. Kids are looking for a role model and a coach who takes an interest in their lives.

A coach needs to care and inspire kids with how he cares. Baseball managers are infamous for trying to rally the troops by getting ejected. For some kids that works, for others its kinda of a let down to see their leader lose their cool. At the end of the day you have to care about what you do. If you don't, kids won't be inspired and you're team will get trashed every week. Sometimes your kids gotta get fired up and need someone to model behavior that shows that its okay to stand up to the bully. You just gotta have a purpose for your demeanor. That said - its tough to keep your cool in any sport - especially when you're not on the field!

I have tried to coach like Tom Landry on the sidelines and it just doesn't work for me. At the end of the day, we have to be ourselves, balancing our passion with our respect for the players, the coaches and the referees. I think you can be passionate and not disrespectful and when we make a mistake, we own up to it. Sounds exactly like what you do and what HCSS did last year. Good luck with your season going forward.

LOL, I love hearing these stories from other coaches... Couple of bad tendencies I have:

1) Screaming into the headset without moving the microphone or muting myself, effectively blasting the other coaches.
2) When our Head Coach calls in the Offensive play, if I'm not a fan, you might hear a disparaging remark... This gets him in a tizzy and then he starts to scramble and look for a different play... LOL, I have self control issues.
3) Running the sideline and cutting off referee's. I cannot even tell you how many warnings I've received from referee's for being in their line, or, again for disparaging remarks.

* As a side note, I am as respectful as anyone to referees, until they make a bad call.

Jack, have you ever coached youth football? I have for 15 years. You want running up scores, swearing, and threats, come out to a youth game. Our first real game is tomorrow morning at 8am against the championship runner-up from last year (they've also won it 2 years). We have never beaten them. This will be our last shot and I think our best.

You know, I use to coach JV hoops when I lived in Oregon, I loved to press full court, man to man because I the kids had to be in really good shape, it made them work really hard or it was evident when they werent and it gave me the opportunity to play 10-11 kids. I pressed the entire game regardless of score. Some opposing coaches didn't like it, some thought I was crazy, some got extremely pissed off. I was Shafered a few times, again didn't care and I never really got into it with any of the meatheads that typically coach JV basketball. Most didn't really understand why I did it. I lit a few teams up bad and I mean really bad but never stopped full court pressure.

That said, the kids and the parents really enjoyed it because I played so many kids. Most of the kids were freshman and the best freshman 2-3 freshman were already on varsity. The varsity coach enjoyed playing man to man and pressed a lot too so I just followed suit but did take it to the extreme for sure.

I will say this it was a ton of fun and the kids loved it

Gee are his initials RW. If so maybe I will follow those tweets tonight.

Didn't Paterno break a leg or hip or something when a player ran into him on the sidelines? I wouldn't want to see any of the players on the opposing team hurt, but if there's a close play out of bounds and the coach happens to be nearby...

Haha, not RW. I wish it was RW. The kids name is Nyheim Hines. His highlight tape is very good. You can't teach legit 4.38 speed. Smaller back, 5-9 and 180 pounds. Very fast and shifty.

I have never coached youth football. I was fortunate to get a varsity gig as soon as I moved to North Carolina, specializing in linemen and linebackers. Started at a 3A school, and have worked up to a 4A school. Hopefully it's just a matter of time before I get a varsity coordinator gig. I'm 27 years old right now, and have told myself if I can get the credentials o by the time i'm 30, then I will start applying for GA positions at the college ranks with some experience under my belt. I tell students everyday to fight and grind for their dreams, so I figure it's only right to follow that advice.

I do the same thing with the headset Finwad. Our head varsity coach is the Defensive Coordinator for our varsity team, and I am up in the booth on the headset talking directly to him. He told me it's the first time he's had someone in his ear who knows the game, so he's enjoying it.

I have the mindset that you and I have some of the same coaching mannerisms.

It's not worth winning if you can't win big.

In context, none of this behavior is as bad as when Buddy Ryan tried to punch Kevin Gilbride on the sidelines.

If it makes you feel better, I'm currently pounding beers with your boy, Jordan.

Nice thread. Coaching is not an easy endeavor. Good luck to all of you.
