Amazing article in the NY Post about a new book coming out. How having a big money donor like Phil Knight can just ruin a school in every way.
It’s a dumb article that’s very clearly a hit piece.
The school is WAY better off w/ the money. It’s admittedly not as well off as it could be if Phil was more hands off, but that’s not the point. The article tries to make it sound like the money is a curse. It isn’t. It’s (at worst) a mitigated blessing.
The comment about improving the school’s profile to the point where is now attracts more out of state students is especially dumb. That’s not a bad thing. Also, the quality of the writing (or lack thereof) can be seen in that sane section, where the author comments on out of state students paying more in tuition, like it’s a financial wins fall for the school. It’s not. Assuming that Oregon acts like every other public school that I’ve seen, the school gets the same amount per student, in state or out of state. The difference is that the state covers part of the in-state tuition via state appropriations. So, the students pay less, but the school comes out even. And, reductions in state appropriations, only increase in-state tuitions. The school still comes out even.
