this just in. Whispered rumor of another billion dollar SU campaign (might be multi-billion???) to be announced - might be more focused on a capital campaign instead of an endowment campaign...

Any lines to read between?

Lot of my former contacts no longer work at SU (read between those lines) so my sources are no longer reliable. I really have no direct contacts anymore so anything I hear is 2nd, 3rd, 4th hand and suspect and just rumors - one reason I don't post much anymore.

But this whisper may have some legs...makes sense given all that Severud wants to accomplish during his tenure.

They did a billion before and exceeded it by 44 million. Maybe they're gonna shoot for 2 billion this time.

We need alumni and community members with more money. People get irritated when you ask for money (beyond a nominal yearly donation) too often.

Maybe they should use the endowment to start playing mega-millions

Bees - that was the number whispered - you must be an oracle!

Doctor - capital campaigns are generally more successful than endowment campaigns since money raised is allocated to specific projects.

Agreed - worst that happens is they ruffle a few feathers and dont quite get enough money i guess

they should avoid catholic alumni then; we already get bombarded with fundraising appeals every third Sunday.

Capital Fundraisier?
2 Billion goal?

New stadium, here we come!

;)

Let's see......$2 billion covers three new schools and a state of the Art stadium. Might work

If this happens, I'm just curious to see which big players would be willing to step up. We all know of highly successful alumni from SU, but $2 billion is another game.

On average, that's 200,000 people donating $10,000 each. Baffling to think about.

agree. no one devotes all their giving to a wealthy university either, there are real problems out there to tackle. so whoever is donating big money to SU is also donating big money to other causes. it's mind boggling that there are enough people with that kind of money that care about SU

Took 7 years to make the $1B campaign.

Right, so an implied 14 year fundraising period to get to $2 bil? Either the state needs to step up with a big chunk or some company would want the naming rights to a potential new stadium. The big chunks of monies are so important. I'm bearish on this rumored campaign.

Hey this is a big reason why we brought in Coyle, right? Now we get to see just how good he is.

Naming rights deals are usually not that juicy to put a big dent in $2b. That's a ridiculous number

Many comprehensive capital campaigns last 7 years these days, especially with numbers as large as that. Throw in the silent phase of these campaigns, and they can stretch to 10 years. Also, those big lofty numbers are almost never made up of just cash gifts in hand. Lots of bequests, deferred gifts, government grants and expert accounting help schools reach these campaign goals.

Something like this has to be a public/private enterprise. On the private equity side you can have the construction company, the owner(?) operator, and in this case Destiny, which brings the parking and land to the transaction and gets marketing and people into its property. You can private project financing and county bonding. The state can provide funds directly and the county can bond for funding as well.

Clearly this insurmountable task should not be such a big hill to climb. One of the reasons I assume Syverud wants to increase the research programs is because often the school will either own a part of any patents that come out of that, or they see a lot more donations as thanks for funding an incubator idea, or both. The numbers in the link above are in the millions. Harvard's endowment is almost $36 Billion. We don't even make the top 50.
