OT -- Remember the "Jewish Jordan?"

He's allegedly speaking at SU this weekend.

I say allegedly because there are so many errors in the posting on Syracuse.com that it's hard to distinguish fact from fiction.
I actually watched Tamir Goodman play a game in high school. The only way that his game was similar to Jordan's may have been the sneakers. He was a better than average high school player that was hyped at a crazy level.

Maryland offered him. But once they figured out he really couldn't play they wriggled out of the offer.

He is speaking they talked about this at our RA meeting and asked if any of us wanted to go.

There are no editors in America any more!! How can they call him the first Jewish-born basketball player? Anyone ever hear of Dolph Schayes? Danny Schayes? Joh Scheyer? Nadav Henefeld, Ernie Grunfeld? Doron Sheffer? All the great NYC players of the 1950's? Etc. Etc. Etc.

I didn't even read it, and was wondering who is this guy, and who is he compared to some of the names you mentioned above?

So the story was about how he is Orthodox, and couldn't play on Friday night or Saturday. I sort of remember this story now. Dolph, Danny, Ernie, etc. were not as observant. Sort of like Sandy Koufax not pitching on the major Jewish holidays, but still not quite the same, that was only 3 days a year Sandy would not pitch. Story is not well written, as pointed out by Joyce. Made it sound like he was the first Jew ever to play college basketball. Back in the Dolph Schayes days there were a lot of Jewish players. We used to actually be really good at basketball, lol!!! Not me tho.

If you take a look at Ray Young's seminal Orange Hoops web site, you will find many of SU's early stars in basketball were Jewish. There is a long, proud history of great Jewish basketball players here.

Since the thread morphed from ORTHODOX Jews playing Division 1 ball (of which Tamir Goodman does seem to be the first) to just Jewish players in general...
the best recently was definitely Jordan Farmar at UCLA.
Seriously.

Goodman's website says he was the first to play D-1 ball wearing a yarmulke and refusing to play on the Sabbath. They left that part out in the Syracuse.com piece.

There is a book written by Charley Rosen entitled "House of Moses All Stars" about a Jewish barnstorming team back in the day. Charley is not always the best basketball analyst but he is a pretty good writer, besides the fact that he is best friends with Phil Jackson and lived together in Woodstock. Here is a link to some of his books that he is written. I've read a bunch of them and they are all pretty good reads.
