For those who watch and put stock in this sort of thing, Syracuse University jumped up to #53 in the National University rankings just released. Finally seems to be moving in the right direction. And leapfrogged, among others, our friends at UCONN. Congratulations to Chancellor Syverud on turning the ship around.

I saw that. Moving in the right direction. We're moving back into the neighborhood w our peer schools. I'm amazed at the sheer volume of public schools in the top 50 like Illinois, Georgia, Florida, etc. The pricetag for these schools has really changed the dynamic on where students want to go

This is GREAT!
SU should always be a Top 50 school. It's stupid, but that means something (at least to me).
I bet it gets back there in the not-too-distant future.

I love, love, love this! It's been a bummer watching the downward creep the last 20 years. Our peer schools (in my view) have historically been USC and BC - both of whom have seen their rankings rise - while ours has fallen.

So glad to see a positive trend!

TG Cantor is gone, and better yet, went to Rutgers.
Honestly, a school like Rutgers-Newark is where she should be. It's more in keeping with her philosophy.

I'm always amazed that any colleges except the top endowment schools can even keep pace with the government schools. I wonder where we'd be without Maxwell and Newhouse.

we're in good company where we are - the other schools around us are good.

if you ignore the numbers and just look at the company you're in, it feels ok. sometimes i think the reputation of the sports teams reflects poorly on the school. miami for instance is a good university but the old football teams are the first thing you think of

Apologies if this thread is duplicative, but USNWR rankings are out, and BC (#38) still beats us, but...

SU - #53
RU - #56
PSU - #59
UCONN - #63
PITT - #70

...and, we have positive momentum.

Good. I believe SU was upper 30s/low 40s when I was there in the early 90s. Would like to get back there pronto.
I agree - I think that SU needs to get to about where BC is.

But two pieces of silver lining:
1. We were about 10 places higher a couple of years ago
2. We’re closer to BC than PITT.

That’s quite a move. Looks like they have changed their criteria a bit. I have followed these closely as in the past few years I had kids applying to colleges. Good to see some SUNY love as well in the top 100.

What number were we last year?
Also this is part of the October 24 hour giving campaign (which will once again be done this year, I think it is October 25). 10% of a school's ranking comes from how many alumni donate, and how many new ones donate who have not donated before. So there is an emphasis on working on that number, which schools like BC do to get their numbers up.
Also there has been an ongoing effort to analyze how those schools get the numbers, and to try to duplicate things that those schools that should be our nearest competitors are doing. BC is considered one of the schools SU is trying to duplicate. They feel in the past, there was not enough emphasis at looking at our rankings compared to those schools as opposed to just increasing our rankings. So some schools that should be comparable were making larger strides, and that was setting us back. Trust me, getting our rankings up is a huge priority. Obviously academics is also a part. But there are those other tricks that the BCs of the world were doing that we were not. Now we are.

One thing country has down is higher education. Every school listed there is a great university. Still, it's great seeing SU move up the rankings. It's been a long time since we've moved in the right direction.

Anyone know why all the UC schools are top 50 now? Is it price tag and students available in California? Amazing how they all are top 50

Let’s not get dramatic and call PSU a great university. Is it a university? Sure, in a loose sense of the word. Is it great? Definitely not.

Mr. Glass Half Empty here...I hope the whole institution is actually improving and they're not just gaming the ranking system and/or taking advantage of whatever metrics were changed this year. The day Syracuse University's quality matches its reputation -- as a top-40 university -- will be a good day for all of us.

I will always laugh at BC students and alums with their perpetually inflated assessment of their school. It's a good school, that's it

it's weird how those cultures emerge. i'm sure there are lots of examples - one example from rochester is how great St John Fisher College alums think the school was. I'm sure it's fine but c'mon. it always cracks me up - the school has done a good job convincing their own
