I wasn't planning on coaching this year because of my eye problems. But they weaseled me into it. When we showed up for our first practice with my son there were two teams there and the guy was going to coach both of them. So I volunteered but I think they knew I would all along.

With my eye problems I've been wearing an eye patch over my bad eye. So rather than sulk about it we decided to call our rec team the Pirates. I get endless pirate jokes from my local coaching friends. My older son suggested the team not call me coach but "captain". When my team puts our hands together in the huddle to yell "team" on 3 instead of saying "team" we yell "Rrrrrrrrrrr".

As with all basketball teams, prior to the first game you feel like you are going to win the championship. But with my sixth graders it turns out, since I was not at the initial draft, I ended up with a lot of players who probably have never played organized basketball before. They barely knew the rules. We lost 4 straight games but every week I kept working on basic skills, positioning, passing, inbound pass, breaking the press, shooting, dribbling, triple-threat posturing, helping each other on defense.

It eventually worked and we won our first game. Now I know this is only sixth grade rec but it felt like the Orange making the final four to me. After the game my team put their hands together in the huddle and screamed really loud "Rrrrrrr" after the on 3. Everyone was smiles and happy.

We then won a bunch more games and became tied with another team with the 3rd best record. They flipped a coin and my team is the #3 team in the playoffs. This is really hard for me to imagine based on the kids I had started with and our 0-4 start. I am thrilled to the bone just to be the #3 seed!

So tonight, we play team #2 in the quarter finals of the playoffs. The team we are playing beat us twice and they have the tallest kid in the league. My son is the 3rd tallest. We've had two practices and we've change our defense to a box-and-1 where my son will guard their best player the whole game. I've spent hours with my son moving his feet on defense and knowing how to box out properly on offense (which as you know is tricky).

Last Tuesday during our final game of the regular season my team played their best basketball of the season. It was amazing to watch. These kids really looked like basketball team. It was incredible! I kept hitting the assistant coaches arm every time they did something right. I just could not believe what I was watching. So I'm very hopeful we have chance to win tonight and make it into the championship game.

Wish me and my team luck for tonight! Go Eye Patch!!

That's a great thing coaching the kids. Hope the parents are good to you...A box and one is a nice setup. I know one team that primarily uses the 2-3 - It works OK I guess, but from time to time people wonder if they should go man-to-man. Also, not getting the best kids should work to your advantage as you will most likely be able to use all 4 years of their eligibility. Good luck and G-d speed.

Good story. I'm pulling for you. But I agree with GoHam. You gotta light a fire under your guys. The hall of fame way to do that is to absolutely savage them at Pizza Hut after the game in front of their friends, family, and school newspaper.

Yeah, I've been thinking about my motivation pre-game speech for awhile. First I was going to go with "Play your guts out because you will remember the the next 20 minutes for the rest of your life" speech. And then I thought I would go with "On any given night any team can beat any other team. We can beat these guys" but that one was not strong enough. I'm now thinking of going with a pre-game huddle and tell the kids to scream a really loud "Rrrrrrrrrr" so the other team knows we mean business.

To be honest with you, the game is going to come down to how well we keep their tallest player from getting every rebound. We practiced hard for it but you never know how the kids are going to play.

Are you saying Boeheim needs an eye patch... or Hopkins?

We have an actualy shot with Hopkins putting 1 on, no chance for JB.

The pre-game speech that Pete Bell gives in the game against Indiana in "Blue Chips" is the best ever. They'll run through a wall for you.

LIttle JOhnny wouldnt play 1 minute if I had ANYONE else. Not 1 minute.

We wouldnt win 10 *cking games without Rocco. Not 10. And the Eaglenews wants to call him overrated!? Of course our beat guys will write it because someone else said it. its the most bullshit thing ive heard in 30 years!

I'd go all Herb Brooks before the Russia game.

I watched the Ridiculous 6 with my 3rd grader over the weekend. The left eye gang was one of the funnier elements of that movie.

"What's wrong with your wiener? Well, let's just say that before this gang, I was part of the Texas stubbies!"

Have fun, tell your son if all else fails, sweep the leg and use the elbow!

great story, same thing happened to me w/ my son in baseball, kids that weren't all that serious about the game. (maybe that should have read parents) but I didn't get to draft, we lost every game but kept getting closer and closer. Last game of the season we had a runner on third w/ one out against an undefeated team, last of the sixth, tied up and my poor kid on third froze on a ground ball to second base. well we lost in extras but it was a wonderful summer. Good job to you and good luck
