all i know is that if someone hit me with a throw in i'm pretty sure i would keep my eye on the ball on the next one. having said that, i doubt there is a written rule but i think it is pretty easy to call unsportsmanlike on that play in a college game.

The rule is, a defender should be a minimum of 2 yards from the thrower - which she clearly was. Its possible that the thrower accidentally hit her with the first throw. Possible. The second throw, it's obvious she lined her up and hit her. And yes, unsportsmanlike conduct covers her actions throwing or deliberately kicking a ball at an opponent.

didn't look to me like she threw at her either time. guess the Ref did.

video's been taken down. Anyone got a mirror?

Is this really a surprise? Everyone knows that girls can't throw.

I played and coached soccer for nearly 40 years, and I'd like to see where in the rule book that is a foul. To me, it's no different that an opponent lining up too close on a free kick and getting hit with the ball. There's really no reason the girl who got hit with the throw-ins needed to be that close (especially after getting nailed with the first one). If she was back another 5-10 feet, she could have easily re-directed the throw or chest-trapped it.

Consider page 75. http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/afdeveloping/refereeing/law_12_fouls_misconduct_en_47379.pdf

Te defender was not too close. The thrower may likely not have intended to hit her with the ball on the first throw. Maybe. But certainly did on the second throw. Intentionally throwing any object at another player - including the ball - is a punishable offense. It is treated like kicking - or attempting to kick- another player.

I've never played nor coached soccer in my 38 years and I can tell you that is totally unsporstmanlike. If it walks like a duck...

Soccer is replete with "unsportsmanlike" moments... for example, when a free kick is awarded and the defenders don't line up 10 m from the ball, stalling for time. If the offensive player kicks the ball and it hits a defender who is too close, is that also a foul on the offensive player?

For the life of me, I don't see any tactical advantage for the defender to position herself so close on the throw-in. If she is responsible for marking the thrower, she should be back further so the thrower doesn't sprint past her after releasing the ball. I also don't understand why, after the 1st throw hit her, the girl didn't move back another yard or two, or at least be more aware.

Good one! Both throws are incredibly intentional.

if she did that the first one was a great acting job , she looked totally shocked by it.. the second one i thought she was trying to throw it past the girl or off the girls back. what reason did she have for trying to hit a player in the head unless something was going on during the game?

No ref is going to card a player for kicking the ball into a wall of players or a single player who is encroaching on the offensive player's ability to get a quick restart. However, if the offensive player were to turn in a direction NOT likely to be part of an offensive attack, and deliberately kick the ball an opponent, absolutely that player is likely to be booked.

Those were two excellent throws by that girl. The defender was not too close on the first, and had moved even farther away on the second.

Lol. 89th minute? Those throws were BOTH completely deliberate

No doubt at all. But likewise it was obviously retaliation for something.

That doesn't mean it was unsportsmanlike, I took throw ins at people all the time. She tried to immediately play it, too.

Not a foul, IMHO.

Correct - great acting job - and correct - something likely happened during the game, ala the Ainge video above, or perhaps she was just crazy peed off to lose and that girl was her victim.

Agree. Good call by the ref. The girl who threw the ball at the other girl should be ashamed of herself.
