OT - Urban Meyer gets ripped in this story

I'm always skeptical of stories like this. A typical example of the media trying to paint one side as the bad guy and conjure up as much controversy as possible in order to grab the most hits to the website. Just seems phony to me.

Couldn't agree more. As to Meyer being a great coach -- he wins everywhere. If he's not there for 10 or 20 years, who cares? He wins, so he has to be pretty elite. I think there are always disgruntled players at a place like UF where all the guys were absolute studs in h.s. and some struggle when they become small fish in a huge pond.

Is Meyer a great guy? I doubt it. Does he use the "rules" to his advantage whenever possible? Yeah, probably. But does this just make him another football coach at a power school? Yeah, I think so.

I simply can't believe that guys like Saban and Carroll and mack brown, etc. don't fall prey to the same tactics. And marijuana is a huge part of college athletics and college life in general. I know, I know, it's illegal and not a great idea to use regularly but the reality is these problems exist all over the place.

I agree with your post, to me Meyer just seems like a typical douche bag college coach with a big ego an inflated outlook on his self worth and a win at all costs attitude, not really a huge deal, but I certainly think Meyer is a class a as are many of these coaches but this is what happens when you pay phys ed teachers 4-5 mil a year. I don't fault him for the weed and a few other issues, but I will say that I think he would sell his soul to the devil for a 5 star recruit, nor do I think a guy like Meyer EVER has the best interest of the student athlete at heart, he runs a factory and I guess I am alright with that.

Yup, I agree. I think, particularly at the highest level, that defining "best interest of the student-athlete" is ambiguous anyway. That report lays out a lot of issues but they tend to boil down to drug use and entitled kids. I'm not sure that even the great Bill Belichik has the "right" answer for that. I mean, in a lot of ways these kids getting to the NFL and having success is really the best possible scenario and Meyer seemed to produce plenty of NFL kids annually. So is Meyer pandering to these kids? Probably but he's really being paid $4M a year to win games and, preferably, stay out of NCAA trouble. Anyone who thinks otherwise is naive.
