Hello sports fans,
TL;DR - I'll buy two season tickets to whoever submits the best Syracuse themed creative writing piece in this thread
As some of you may be aware I live a long ways away from my hometown of Syracuse, New York. Despite the distance, I've remained loyal to Syracuse sports. Many of you will also know that for years I've advocated (along with others) that Syracuse capitalize on the Dome by developing an offensive identity centered around a top flight passing game. I've believed that not only does that give our program the best chance to compete, but it would also be fun and would energize fans to come back to the Dome in greater numbers.
The Dino Babers hire is a monumental step in that direction, and I'm excited to see what our program becomes in the upcoming years. Alas, that will likely be done by watching games on TV from my couch because I live in the mountain west. I wish I could be there in the Dome to see it live.
Some of you may also know that I'm kind of a crazy guy. In celebration of our new coach, and to support the idea that more offense = more fun = bigger crowds, I now open the "Money Where His Mouth Is" Creative Writing contest. Here are the details:
The grand prize - Two (2) season tickets for the 2016 Syracuse home football schedule. I don't know yet how much coin I'll drop for these because I just made this decision on the fly and haven't talked with my wife about it, but I will buy season tickets. If Dome reno makes the schedule weird we'll figure something out. Also, since I don't want to discourage current season ticket holders from participating in the contest, if you already have season tickets, I will donate an equivalent amount of money for season tickets to the University. I reserve the right to grant a second prize of two (2) season tickets if there are two excellent submissions, or grant a four (4) ticket super prize for a family. I don't know, I'm crazy. Maybe I'll throw in Dinosaur BBQ gift cards too.
Participant rules - You must be a Syracuse fan, and as proof of that I will consider submissions from any syracusefan.com profile that has more than 500 posts. I will also consider the submission if you are new to the board and a tenured board member (1000 or more posts) will vouch for your fandom. Send me a PM if this is the case for you. Also send me a PM if you live more than an hour's drive from the Dome and want to gift your winning tickets to a friend or family member local to Syracuse.
Submission rules - Submissions will be accepted from now until midnight mountain time on Saturday, December 19th. Ideally the winner will be notified on or around Christmas Eve, depending on how many we get and how long it takes me to read them and decide which is worthy. So, actually, I'll probably announce the winner no later than New Year's Day. Yeah, that's more realistic. Submissions must be original works. Any length is accepted. You may write them directly in the thread, or submit them in the thread as an attachment. All submissions must include a clear Syracuse theme and Dino Babers.
Evaluation criteria - I like stuff that's funny. I like stuff that's ridiculous. I like action. Bonus points if your writing makes me go through the emotional range I experience in a typical game thread. Some semblance of plot is good. Suspense is good. Props for dropping references to Syracuse all over the place. I'm going to pick the story I like the best. and I honestly have no idea how that will go. Make it good, make it count.
Don't have any ideas? Well, maybe see if any of these get your creative juices flowing -
Jurassic Park/Dino Babers fan fiction
Dino Babers and Otto the Orange are buddy cops
Dino Babers and the Dinosaur BBQ Bikers defend the fair city of Syracuse from aliens
Jim Boeheim and Dino Babers vs the NCAA/meatheads/bad guy of your choice
Passin' 2: Electric Boogaloo
Suggested characters may include any or all of - Dino Babers (must be included), Syracuse coaches or players past and present (all sports), Mark Coyle, Syracusefan.com board members (bonus points for CuseTroop or JarHeadJim because I feel like there's serious comedy potential there), Jim Boeheim, Juli Boeheim (keep it respectable, you circus animals), Otto the Orange, Stats Girl (again with the respectability reminder), Ralph Macchio, Jim Brown (he gets his own mention), famous Syracuse alumni or other celebrities local to Syracuse, the Saltine Warrior, the Dome Ranger, President Barack Obama, Batman, Wayne Mahar, an in-his-prime Billy Fuccillo
FAQ (I'll add to this if people have questions in the thread) -
OttoinGrotto, why are you doing this?
Well, football is supposed to be fun. I think today's announcement will help Syracuse football be more fun. Contests and creativity are fun. In the grand scheme of things, putting a bounty on some season tickets like this won't cost a lot of money. I'm guessing if our community embraces the idea the fun we all have with the contest will far outweigh the cost of these tickets for me. Seems like a good trade.
Is this for real?
Yup, we're really doing this. I want a tangible way to show as a fan that I'm serious in my belief that we made the right move by hiring a guy that's great at offense. More than that, going to games is fun. I'd like to help someone have that fun.
