Remember back when when Oregon and Auburn played for the national title? Word was, Chip Kelly's scheme was BRUTAL to prepare for with one week, but if you had time to really dissect the tape and understand the tendencies, even though everything happens quickly, your defense can keep up. Time + Cam Newton = Auburn championship.

Well... Florida State had the time to prepare that you need to stop Oregon's power offense. That opportunity is gone. Urb is a great coach, and he clearly got his team ready for Bama, but now he's got to turn around and be ready for Oregon with just slightly more time than normal.

Not gonna happen. Crown the Ducks.

P.S. The playoff is one more reason why playing uptempo offense is the way to go these days in college football. It really is a shame that in Syracuse that concept goes to die.

For me the knock on Kelly is that he was never a good enough coach to win the big game. I think this just proves this even more when Oregon goes on to beat Ohio State.

He never did, but if he stuck with the college game I think it was only a matter of time.

He also didn't have Mariota vs. Auburn.

Oregon won because the D caused 5 to's FSU should probably have been ahead mid way thru the 3rd and had better stats. but you cant give the ball away that many times and survive unless you are playing SU..

FSU went up and down the field all game too.

Probably true.

What's your impression of their defense this year compared to when he coached. I never thought their defense was as "soft" under Kelly as some people insinuated, I always thought they were pretty good, just not good enough to win a Championship. But do you think their defense this year without Kelly is better? They seem much more physical than years before.

I think they have a lot of talent. I do think for a while they were a bit one sided, but they just don't lose. That brings in the best, and brings out the best. That helps the defense too. I don't know, they face such a good offense, those units have to help each other get better.

I think this will be a really fun championship.

The main reason the SEC had that insane streak of national champions is that nobody could compete with their defensive lines. Other schools could go toe to toe with skill players, but when push came to shove in the high stakes game, nobody had an answer for the depth and quality of the defensive lines. While Cam Newton was certainly pivotal in the Auburn victory over Oregon, I'd argue Nick Fairley was the difference maker (3TFL, 1 sack, 1FF and needing to be schemed around each and every play, named Defensive Player of the Game).

This article is from 2012, but it shows how the SEC dominated putting defensive linemen in the league, and Saban credited the SEC defensive fronts as being based on the speed and athleticism of their defensive fronts. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=ncf&id=8370168

Without having to face such a defensive front, I think Oregon finally wins one. All respect to OSU, as I didn't think they'd have a shot against Alabama, but I don't think they are in Oregon's class and, while anything can (and does!) happen, I don't see OSU pulling the rabbit out of the hat twice in a row, especially against a competent QB and one that won't be rattled the way Sims was.
