We will be watching the NCAA football's first Final Four this year, (at least the first major college one), and wondering if Syracuse could ever find itself there in our lifetimes. In the meantime, we'll have our own Final Four to watch in the spring. And I'm not talking basketball, (at the moment).
Bud and the Manchild were talking about our quarterback situation this morning and Bud was praising AJ Long for having that "it factor" that should make him the guy for the next four years. I called in to ask him not to forget about Austin Wilson, who I though looked pretty good before his injury. Bud said that he liked Wilson but that he might be advised to transfer due to Long. He said in almost every other position in sports, if you can play, they will find a place for you. But if a quarterback is just slightly worse than the other guy, he'd doomed to be a back who rarely plays.
It got me to thinking abut the competition we'll have in the spring and fall, (I'm assuming Alin Edouard shows up as planned).
TERREL HUNT - He has by far the most experience, although AJ will have more and more as the season progresses. I remember how much the team picked up when he entered the game against Northwestern. he obviously had the respect and loyalty of his teammates and I doubt he's lost it. He's a big, strong runner, agile enough to make his way through a broken field but lacking in any real speed or elusiveness. He appeared to be an adequate passer going into this but badly regressed, looking more like RJ Anderson than Donovan McNabb. Also, if he's out 4-6 weeks I'm not sure it's good for him and the team to try to comeback before the spring. What if Long is playing well? Do we want to disrupt things by putting Hunt back in the mix?
AUSTIN WILSON- That's an NFL arm. If you want to base you attack on passing, he's your guy. He's a big strong guy, (which didn't prevent him from being kayoed by FSU). He's not much of a runner and may not be ideal if you offense is based on having a dual threat QB> But he's going to put up some numbers for somebody, somewhere, even if it doesn't turn out to be us.
AJ LONG - He seems to me a "jack of all trades" quarterback. It's too early to tell if he's a master of any of them. I thought he was competent, not dazzling in these last two games. Competent was more than we getting from Hunt. I think our desire to have a star quarterback emerge and Long's now famous confidence has convinced some, including bud that he's "the guy". I think it's too early to tell. He can pass but doesn't have Wilson's arm. He can run much faster than Hunt and is a better scrambler but isn't as big and we don't know how durable he'll be, (of course Hunt and Wilson are both much bigger and on the shelf. they were not injured running the ball.) He looks promising but so far that's the most that can be said.
ALIN EDOUARD I'm a sucker for a good highlight film, (Mike Jones was going to be Red Grange). That said, I look at this and I see a guy that has everything you'd want to run a modern spread:
I really think he could be "the guy". Let's not settle on anyone else until he gets his chance.
I think it could be the best kind of competition: one where each contestant brings something positive to the table. I could see more than one guy who loses out starring for someone else. As long as we get a "guy" out of it, I'll be happy. Nothing elevates a program faster than getting a star quarterback.
