Gilbert had insane leverage on UT. The school was desperate to overhaul its offense after hiring a conservative, defensive minded coach in Strong who brought over Shawn Watson, who proved to be not up to the task when not coaching Teddy Bridgewater. UT was caught off guard when their first choice, Sonny Cumbie, the OC from TCU, turned them down. UT/Coach Strong were scrambling, and they turned to Gilbert, who promptly turned them down. UT panicked and put on the full court press, flying up not just Strong, but the athletic director and the actual school president to Gilbert's house. They ultimately gave him an offer he couldn't refuse, and he came to UT along with Mike Mattox, the OL coach (and another Briles/Babers guy). I have to think reuniting with Babers is appealing to Gilbert. He may have forged a good relationship with Strong, but Strong at his heart will always be a more conservative, defense oriented coach - and as head coach, his mentality will have final say. A sticking point might be Mattox, who Gilbert would most certainly want to come along. Mattox has been OL coach and run game coordinator at UT and USF. He and Lynch would greatly overlap, and eventually you will run into a problem of too many cooks in the kitchen. Mattox may not want a step down in responsibility. I'm not sure what juggling possibilities there are on the staff and who is able to coach what, but personally, I'd love to see Gilbert and Mattox come aboard.
