It is the first game of the season, and you can't see everything going on from watching on TV, but there is one thing that I have kept quiet about, but had my reservations from the beginning: Less soldiering and more football! I think it was a mistake to use 1/3 of camp at Fort Drum, which I believe was a distraction from the process of instilling the offense, putting the team together and developing and refining skills. There are many metaphors used from warfare pertaining the football... but that is precisely what they are, metaphors! As I understand it, leadership issues was the primary goal, and the only leadership I saw today came from a 5th year senior, starting for his third season as QB and would have demonstrated the same leadership he showed today without Fort Drum. Instead of leadership, I saw stupid penalties (off-sides, 12 men on the field, late hits, etc.) and poor tackling. These are indications that the team was not ready to play. When you waste 1/3 of your camp to get ready, this is the result. Add to that the fact that we have a terrible special teams coach; Marrone. This was a terrible effort on punt returns, which is probaby due, in part, to being unprepared, but is on the head of the special teams coach. It is compounded by a failure to adjust, i.e. kick away from the NW punt returner and/or OOB. There is an old saying, once a fool shame on you, twice a fool shame on me. This one was inexcusable and costly. Also, Kobena runs KO returns like a sprinter and not a football player, i.e. straight up and down. I can't believe we don't have someone better than this, and God forbid we actually try to return a punt instead of safe catch! The team was inconsistent and at times confused and there was a lot of standing around. This is another sign that they were poorly prepared and not ready to play. Additionally, we waited too long to exploit the overplaying CB, #22 I think was his number, whose chief technique was interferrence. I think that the injuries and NCAA hurt them as well: Pugh, Raymon, Lemon, Stevens, and Thompson. But this one is on Marrone's head for a poor decision to spend a week at Camp Drum instead of Camp Football!

While you may have a point as to grammar, this IS an internet board, not a composition class. Consider that when you pay more attention to process than content you miss the point i.e. that when you waste 1/3 of camp in distraction, the result is that you are unprepared and not ready to play. You may disagree with this premise, but I think it unworthy to discount it by criticizing the grammar.

Fort Drum is the issue?

Ugh.

You realize they practiced football at Fort Drum, right? They practice the maximum hours that you can regulated by the NCAA and the other stuff was done in place of players free time. When on campus, that free time is probably spent watching TV, sitting on a computer, drinking, etc. Very ill informed post.

The offense was more than anyone could have expected, or asked for. The D was showing signs of promise, but stupid mistakes killed momentum

I really don't think that is true at all. We could have won but for a bunch of reasons:
  1. Anene makes the interception.
  2. Lynn doesn't do the same old stupid PF crap he always seems to do at critical points in a game.
  3. Krautman makes the FG.
  4. We don't out-kick our coverage and stay in our freakin lanes and don't give up 14 points on ST.
  5. Smith covers the ball as he was taught since Pop Warner and does not give up 7 points..
  6. 13 stupid penalties.
One could argue that we had the guts to come back when all seemed lost because of Ft Drum. Really think you couldn't be more wrong.

I agree with everything you said. I think the reason we lost was because we were unprepared and not ready to play. I was merely saying I think Fort Drum was a distraction from that process we didn't need when you are trying to get ready for the season.

The game was lost at the end by our coach, and his going into that stupid prevent defense. The entire game Northwestern couldn't sustain a drive, our defense was disrupting their plays, then we play that stupid defense, and we are backpedaling, rather then attacking. If we had lost at the end playing our attacking style so be it. The first 5 td's were punt return for touchdown, int return short field, missed fg had about 60 yds to go,Qb pass backwards recovered short field, long punt return short field. The only sustained drive was at the end, against the prevent defense.

Figures I would like this

So the 2 Field Goals inside the Red Zone instead of TD's in the 1st Quarter weren't a factor in this loss?

Agree. Attention to detail (12 men on the field) execution (offsides) and big plays killed us. Lots of potential though, a big sign for hope.

7. Sales! I've yet to see the replay, but that seemed a very poor job letting a catchable ball get batted up into the air for an easy interception (and long return).

Not to mention the 1998-like Tenessee call at the end of the game.

The only thing I took from this is your comment about Kobena. He just doesn't seem to have the nack for returning kickoffs. Too much juking, stutter stepping instead of full speed slicing. His NWern counterpart is a great example.
