It is the first game of the season, and you can't see everything going on from watching on TV, but there is one thing that I have kept quiet about, but had my reservations from the beginning: Less soldiering and more football! I think it was a mistake to use 1/3 of camp at Fort Drum, which I believe was a distraction from the process of instilling the offense, putting the team together and developing and refining skills. There are many metaphors used from warfare pertaining the football... but that is precisely what they are, metaphors! As I understand it, leadership issues was the primary goal, and the only leadership I saw today came from a 5th year senior, starting for his third season as QB and would have demonstrated the same leadership he showed today without Fort Drum. Instead of leadership, I saw stupid penalties (off-sides, 12 men on the field, late hits, etc.) and poor tackling. These are indications that the team was not ready to play. When you waste 1/3 of your camp to get ready, this is the result. Add to that the fact that we have a terrible special teams coach; Marrone. This was a terrible effort on punt returns, which is probaby due, in part, to being unprepared, but is on the head of the special teams coach. It is compounded by a failure to adjust, i.e. kick away from the NW punt returner and/or OOB. There is an old saying, once a fool shame on you, twice a fool shame on me. This one was inexcusable and costly. Also, Kobena runs KO returns like a sprinter and not a football player, i.e. straight up and down. I can't believe we don't have someone better than this, and God forbid we actually try to return a punt instead of safe catch! The team was inconsistent and at times confused and there was a lot of standing around. This is another sign that they were poorly prepared and not ready to play. Additionally, we waited too long to exploit the overplaying CB, #22 I think was his number, whose chief technique was interferrence. I think that the injuries and NCAA hurt them as well: Pugh, Raymon, Lemon, Stevens, and Thompson. But this one is on Marrone's head for a poor decision to spend a week at Camp Drum instead of Camp Football!
