"In a statement riddled with tortuous double talk, ESPN reporter Mark Schwarz tried to explain ESPN’s position. “We did not go to the authorities with the tape. The authorities did speak to Bobby Davis before the tape was made in 2002. He spoke to a Syracuse police detective, who he says spent five minutes on the phone with him and didn’t even do a detective report ... [The detective] told him the statute of limitations had come and gone, and that was why Bobby Davis says he recorded the tape to try to at least corroborate his story this way.”

Reflect for a moment on Schwarz’s words: “We did not go to the authorities with the tape” and “Bobby Davis says he recorded the tape to try to at least corroborate his story this way.”

i think this would be bigger story but other members of press might be afraid to really push issue against other fellow media members

They had evidence of a crime and did nothing about it? How can the media condem Paterno for not reporting or following on a commisson of a crime when they did the same thing.

Scwhartz seems a bit slimy...the way he said that L. Fine "seemed to be smiling" (but this was not on camera) and his response to the question of what Lang had originally told him seemed purposely vague. It was my understanding that Lang had said he knew nothing at first...but Schwartz alluded to more of a "he didn't want to comment" story more recently.

One more thing. It was a bit ironic and galling that Schwartz seemed to take the P-S to task for not releasing the tape to the police the first time.
