I was wondering if playing faster, getting more plays, having more possessions was skewing our stats.

last year after 7 games and throwing out the colgate/RI and the OTs, games our normal number of possessions was just around 11. 12/12/12/10/10/9

This year we have had 12/13/14/14 , but we had 2 games of 17 and 20. But I would argue pace of play didnt cause more possessions. those were the 2 games with huge big play breakdowns, pace would have caused 2-4 more possessions but bad D caused 7-8 more.

so the reality we are getting in most games about 2 more possessions but from this 25 more plays. VT we only had the ball 13 times and ran 100 plays. we had 12 possessions against wake last year and ran 50 plays..

so its not getting the ball more times thats creating more yards, its doing more with the ball when we get it. 2-3 more plays per possession added to 1-2 more possession adds up to huge gains in yards. the 3 and outs still happen but they happen faster and gets us the back sooner and then we do something with it more often.

it will be interesting to see if the offense gets better do we actually run less plays. do we get more yards per play, more points and have the ball less.. it can be a self-fulfilling thing. score faster, so run less plays, or score faster, other team panics more, we get the ball more and score even more.. thats the baylor thing that builds over time.
