My understanding is that each team in a bowl gets a stipend to spend on gear. Winners may get a ring along with it (and the Georgia Techs of the world can elect to spend theirs on a ring too if they’d like). I have some ‘96 Gator Bowl apparel from my roommate, but he kept the ring.

I generally defend the younger generations against older ones for this type of thing.

Not this case, just bizarre. Rings are for national championships and conference championships.
