Just re-read the following...
This year has been the perfect storm. First, Baber's first recruiting class which he cobbled together a couple of weeks prior to the signing deadline is senior / redshirt junior. Second, they have lost several linemen to concussions over the years so the resulting line is young and not as developed as one would hope. Third, this is big boy football (not MAC, AAC, Conf USA), the margin for error is slim (we can delude ourselves but the Big East was not top to bottom big boy football). Fourth, SU has had four coaches in a relatively short period of time which has disrupted continuity (too bad Marrone did not make this a life long gig). Five, losing Chance Amie was not helpful.
Bottom line, this is not in my opinion a total tear down by any stretch of the imagination. It needs some tweaking and adaptation. First, SU needs a stable of 6 ft 3 in + quarterbacks who can run and take the abuse. One gets hurt...roll out another one. The pin point passers are nice if you are in the NFL with great wide receivers, but perfection is the enemy of the good. Just need someone who can throw good enough but is rugged and can run. We have seen this with Hurley, McPherson, Graves, Wilcox, McNabb and Dungey. Second, modify the S&C...the guys have looked undersized this year against most of the teams...need to find the right balance between conditioning and strength. Third, develop big linebackers. Hopefully, some of the DE being recruited can turn into linebackers. Line backers need to be 6 ft 3 inches so that the safetys and corners do not need to cheat up to stop the run (and then get thrown over). Fourth, need the big wide receivers too as we have seen over the last several years as it helps allow us to have less than pin point perfect QBs. Fifth, redshirt redshirt redshirt. Some of our best players were low score recruits that needed to just mature.
Bottom line...Babers is here. He is not going to get poached. He has a long term contract. Wildhack is smart and has a great network. It took MacPherson 7 years to have the magical undefeated season (with year six being the Sack Mack year). Be patient. We will know in 3 more seasons whether this era has been successful.
Sciria: Former Syracuse coach MacPherson's passing reminds us of importance of patience
To revive a college football program, you obviously have to be a good coach. You have to be a great salesman, first, to recruit good players and second, to sell
