I know this topic has been discussed but thought the following was interesting and a further indictment on Dino's lack of attention to detail.

Perhaps not surprising but here is the rank for Dino's team at Cuse and Bowling Green.
YearTeamNCAA rankPenalties per Game
2020Cuse1037.1
2019Cuse1299.1
2018Cuse1117.4
2017Cuse846.4
2016Cuse1248.2
2015Bowling Green1268.8
2014Bowling Green1178.0

So these stats show that Dino sees to run a pretty undisciplined program. I'm not sure you can explain it away by saying he leads an aggressive program or bad luck. However even more indicting of Babers are the stats of these programs in the year before he took over.

In 2013, the year before Dino took over Bowling Green they ranked 38th in the country with an average of 5.1 penalties per game. In one year the team jumped 3.0 penalties per game and dropped towards the bottom of football.

In 2015, the year before Dino brought his offensive genius to SU, the Cuse ranked 40th in the country with 5.5 penalties per game. Once again nearly a 3 penalty per game increase.

When you don't overwhelm with talent you have to win the other battles. This is another area we are not winning.

Cuse!

He historically runs more plays per game so you would think you would average more penalties. Also moving at a faster pace so penalties may be more likely. Would be curious to see what our opponents average penalty wise per game compared to the average. This year we are a little better as we are going slower paced. Though we do have a very young team so you would think that would play a part.

We're averaging 6.5 this season and that includes all the BS penalties that have been called on us.

I think youth is mostly to blame overall. I see less penalties with more veteran teams.

Penalties this year
4 - ohio
8 - rutgers
16 - albany
5 - liberty
3 - fsu
3 - wake

Looks like 2 outliers(i hope.). Under 4 a game for the rest, and more Importantly, our last 3.

We're running less plays, which probably helps that.
You also have a QB who doesn't wait forever to make a decision on what to do. The offensive line doesn't have to hold their blocks a long time, less holds.

In addition, the revolving door we have had at OL the last few years undoubtedly creates more false starts, holds, delay of games. If difference between those and personal fouls and such. I agree that we need to limit our penalties, but at the same time I don’t think it’s quite the issue some here have made it out to be.

Re-upping this thread with 2022 stats.
I got the following info from ESPN:

OpponentNumberYards
Louisville18107
UConn315
Purdue974
UVA1291
Wagner875
NC State760
Clemson1088
ND330
Pitt425
FSU1072
Wake Forest749
BC1491
105777TOTAL

In 2021, the totals were 84 penalties for 692 yards so this year was definitely statistically worse.

It's a little bit of a surprise that SU's cleanest game was against UConn.

Could it be that a lot of ACC refs are from the South and have an unconscious bias against a team not from the South?
Or is there bias because SU has had a lot of losses over the past 20+ years so SU is expected to be sloppy?
The fact that SU has a history of racking up a huge number of penalties doesn't help change any perceptions.

I'd be interested what we're ranked in that category for the last 5-7 years

Syracuse ranks last, #131 of 131 teams, in penalties per game at 8.8. Navy is #1 at 3.2.
That is awful and a continual problem for Dino. Must be a by product of sloppy practices and failure to focus on fundamentals

If like to see the breakdown of false starts and 15-yard PF & Unsportsmanlike. These two are most concerning in my mind of an underperforming OL and lack of discipline overall.

I remember watching Bowling Green when Babers was there and they did the same things...at least the games I watched.

I would have no idea where to look but would love to understand the breakdown of those penalties. For example of the 108 total, I think half (maybe higher) are false starts. I am interested in the false starts specifically because that is definitely the most whistled and would think just cutting that in half would make a huge impact.

Doesn’t the OL know what count the ball is going to be put in play? It drives me insane the amount of false starts they get

This doesn't explain much of it but i wondered last night if it's worth taking a couple of offsides to get more big stops over time. It looks like we take a little more risk of offsides than other teams and that's fine with me.

Crude and quick - there is a small negative correlation between penalties per game and yards per game allowed. i don't have a split between offensive and defensive

Just one example but Navy's defense stinks, they're 113th in yards per play. East Carolina, SMU, South Florida

Alabama has a lot of penalties, Tennessee, Pitt, FSU, Louisville, Virginia, Miami

Gotta wonder if it's acc refs too

Last night, I noticed after,I think Barron unnecessary roughness penalty, he came off the field. The cameras followed him. I couldn’t wait for one of the coaches lay into him for such a bad penalty. Nothing, no coach went over to him. Maybe they did after the camera went back to the field.

I'm really curious...everyone complains the coaches don't light the kids up real-time when these penalties happen. What happens in film review - do they get lit up then? Made to run sprints? Maybe the coaches prefer to praise in public, scold in private?
