Not getting to six in 2019 and not being just 'normal' bad in 2020 is what hurts national and local perception.

Had we hit 6-6 in 2019 that'd be two bowls.
Had we gone 3-9 in 2020, total record would be 27-33, with 2 bowls. Still not what we want, but it'd give Dino more leeway with the fans coming into this year. Regardless, we didn't and we are what our record is, thus the perception.

I'm in the camp Dino needs at least 6 wins, preferably 8 wins this year. That would set him up for next year where he should be able to recruit better with the heat cooled off and with a lot of talent and depth returning, and the expectation nationally and locally that 2022 should be another competitive team that should be participating in bowl season.

You can't turn the ship until you're in bowls more often than not.

Bowl or bust this year to start.

Our perception problem extends beyond 5 years though. Basically the 1960's minus the late 80's and 90's. If Dino wins 6 games this year he deserves to be ACC Coach of the Year.

Everyone wants 8-4 or 9-3 every year.

To be that, we would be like Penn State or Miami based off the last five years.

Most programs have one very good, one good, two average, and one bad year over five years.

We had one very good, one very bad, one average, and two below average years.

I could sum up perception by the season predictions of all the talking heads. There was a variety of opinions of where most ACC teams finish, but the 2 constants everywhere I look is Clemson in 1st place and Syracuse in last place. I haven't seen 1 writer pick us anywhere other than last place and that's with a lot of returning players.

Cuse is a 6-6/7-5 program with a few years of 8-4/9-3 seasons sprinkled in.

That is out of whack expectations.
People should expect 6-6 3 of 5 years.
Better than 6-6 1 of 5 years.
Worse than 6-6 1 of 5 years.

Going 6-6 means going 3-1, 3-5 that isn’t hard.
Ask BC and Wake Forest.

You wanna feel good...go to the board where 10 years ago they universally proclaimed they had passed us as a program. We would never catch them.

I always go over there for a pick me up.

I just hope we don't look like that board next Sunday am.
Some real hate for Randy over there. Wow

Guess Randy is really hated on this board too, but he is an Alum. Glad Terry Richardson got out and landed well at Mississippi State. Would have loved to have a former 44 coaching rbs for us though...

8 wins this year would erase the 4 loss seasons we’ve had. To go from 1 win to 8 would be an incredible turnaround IMO. Combined with the poor game day planning, in game adjustments and clock/TO management - 8 would be even more incredible b/c it allows very few mistakes.

6 for me is really the goal. As others have said in other threads, the schedule this year couldn’t be better for getting back on the right track. I might even be able to justify to myself that 5 wins, depending on what we see on the field is showing improvement

I think that's where we hope to be. We haven't even established that level of mediocrity yet, and mediocre isn't what out national perception is.

Yeah, I always start the perception convos with the fact that since Freeney's senior year, we have been between terrible and mediocre outside of one 10 win season. That is 20 years.

Our issues aren't just coaching. There have been issues with the program outside the coach for a while. Some have been tended to, some have not.

With that said, as it pertains to Dino, he definitely needs to shoulder a chunk of the blame, he's at the helm. Just the way it goes.

Fairly or unfairly, he needs to be competitive this year. How many wins that translates to, we'll see. But there were some basic issues with the team on the offensive side that he has to own and fix, such as having a functional OL, have less unforced penalties, and he has to figure out the QB situation.

I have faith. But not blind faith. I think we get to a bowl game and Dino stays on and keeps the train moving. We'll see.

Not just OL imo. How does he fail to bring in any competition for Curtis Harper? And this in a year where everyone gets a free transfer. I'm not saying Harper doesn't belong; I'm saying how can you not at least make him compete for the 2-Deep. And I'm talking legit 290-300 pounders; the youngsters look promising, but 260lb kids at NT?

That's fair. Legit concern.

My hope is that last year just hit us harder than most teams and Dino can right the ship.

Nothing worries me more when you can't have a functional OL. Not a deep OL. Not an all conference OL. A functional OL.

My second biggest worry is QB. Feels like DB never listened to "The Gambler". Feels like we're trying to fix this a little late in the game.

But I do think we can get to six wins (heck, I think we can get to eight. But I'm the same person that convinces myself that we can win a chip each year before the first kickoff bc I'm an idiot).

You guys realize SU may only be favored in one of their first four games and people are talking eight wins. Get real. I hope the entire country is wrong predicting SU last in the ACC, but I doubt they’re all wrong.

Yes sorry this is what I was trying to convey. In "good" times, what is the program. That's what I was going for.

I look at the schedule and I dont think we even need to be very good to win 6-8 games. but avg is still a pretty big step up from what we have seen most of the last 10-15 yrs. When we have just a decent line on both sides we can compete. why we struggle to find an oline that can at worst win 50/50 battles even 30% of the time its really hard to understand.
