“The allegations that have come forth today are disturbing and deeply troubling. I am personally very shocked because I have never witnessed any of the activities that have been alleged. I believe the university took the appropriate step tonight. What is most important is that this matter be fully investigated and that anyone with information be supported to come forward so that the truth can be found. I deeply regret any statements I made that might have inhibited that from occurring or been insensitive to victims of abuse.”

Probably a lawyer wrote it and JB rubber stamped it but it needed to be done TONIGHT and kudos for it getting done.

Short, sweet, and to the point.

I hate the word "might." They were insensitive to victims of abuse.
Statements made from the best of one's knowledge, after a previous investigation had not been able to corroborate prior accusations, are not insensitive. I do not understand where people are coming from with this. If this were the first anyone had heard about Fine's alleged transgressions, then sure.

As many strange twists as this story has taken, NOTHING is out of the question ;)

Read it again Donnie. "I deeply regret any statements I made that might have inhibited that from occurring or been insensitive to victims of abuse.”

Two separate thoughts.

Perfect. The statements JB made are the best evidence that he had no reason to believe that Fine could have done any of these alleged acts. He made those statements out of emotion and loyalty to a friend of 50 years, again because he had no reason to believe Fine could have done anything wrong. Fine denied the allegations, 3 or 4 investigations were held and JB stuck up for his friend. Now he apologizes for the right reasons. Let the authorities handle it, and let JB coach this basketball team.

Absolutely what he needed to say. Hopefully he follows this up with a press conference where he continually echoes these statements. Not sure if that will happen, but it should. Transparency with the media and a deep regret for everything that has happened will help him and the university big time right now.

JB should have fired Fine instead of Nancy. Every non-union employee has a moral turpitude clause.

Is there really a difference between "disturbing" and "deeply troubling"?

Just quibbling. Statement is fine.

I'd eliminate sentences 2 and 4.

All in all, a very good, and much needed, statement.

Right...no way JB wrote that. I'm sure he regrets what he said before
And I bet he lets the lawyers and pc people help him walk the tightrope

Yes, it's a perfect statement, and it was crafted perfectly by someone other than JB. This is not a diss, just a fact. They pay those PR pros for damage control, which is what this is.

I strongly suspect, but don't know for sure, that the Coach was questioned in great detail by Cantor about what he may or may not have seen, and what he knew or suspected.

I have no doubt that: (a) had his responses not held water; and/or (b) had he not issued a statement like this, he would no longer be coach.

I believe that he SHOULD remain coach as long as there is no credible evidence that he was aware of, or chose to shield himself from, this scandal.

I know that won't make everyone, or anyone happy, but then again, I'm not happy either.

Agree it was the perfect statement. He distanced himself from Fine while apologizing. Not sure if he wrote that or just signed off on it, but regardless, it should save JB.

Good post.

Sentences two and four are the most important in terms of the law and what he had previously stated. But I get your point.

"I'm sorry my comments might have been insensitive" is not the same as saying "my comments were insensitive."

Agreed. Andy Katz just tweeted that he believes sentence 2 is one of the 2 most important points made.

"Statements" are not "evidence." If they were, when Fine said he was not guilty of these charges, that would have been "evidence," as well.

Yeah, JB's first statement was made out of friendship and loyalty. But, also out of arrogance. Thinking you know everything about anyone other than yourself is just another example of arrogance.

If JB cared, at that point, about doing the 'right thing,' he would have said "I stand behind my friend of 50 years and can, in no way, find these accusations to be credible. I've known the accuser, and do not recall the situation in the hotel as he claims. Also, knowing the accuser, i have no reason to believe the assertions he is making."

But, no- JB claimed omniscience, and the fanbase lapped it up.

Humility is free, JB. Try some.
