Class of 2025 PG Camdyn Nelson (CT) COMMITTED TO SYRACUSE (2/10/24)

We have been trying to recruit some tall players either from HS or the Portal for 2 years now with no success!! We have signed 3 recruits so far this year, all under 6-3. There will only be two roster spots open for next season, So these last two spots need to be Post players, 6-3 or taller!! New York State, last recruiting cycle, have two dynamic post players taller than 6-4! Both have ruled out Syracuse. One starts for Notre Dame, and the other has a list of 20 programs she is considering and Syracuse is not even on the list. I know the saying "you can't win them all" when it comes to recruiting, but, we are not keeping pace with our competition...and I know financial compensation is a big part of it. Hopefully, we can find some Bigs in the Portal, because it look like we struck out in this year's HS class.
Need a high level recruiting guru who has experience in that role elsewhere. Need someone hooked into numerous developmental leagues (AAU, high schools, USA basketball etc and overseas connections). It was the one criteria I worried about when Q left.

I respect your opinion, but I am going to say this recruiting problem runs deeper than the old recruiting paradigm. Since the advent of "pay for play", the old recruiting norms are out the window! Coach Jack has all the skills necessary to be a good recruiter. What she personifies and has to sell to potential recruits is compelling enough to win some of these battles. The difference now, is that schools are paying players and many players are going for the schools that can drop off the biggest "bag". College athletics has changed completely and not everyone is equiped to succeed in this new landscape. Money is such a taboo topic. No player or their familiy is going to admit in public that they went for the cash, but that is what is going on behind the scenes. Syracuse has two choices, they can join the "arms race" and up their financial commitment to the women's program and enhance their
ability to pay players or they can continue to play by the old rules, and look for ways to maximize their ability to scout and recruit under the radar talent. The ACC now has three programs, Miami, North Carolina, and Stanford with top 10 recruiting classes and I think 3 others are in the top 25.

I wasn’t criticizing Coach Jack’s effort, got to love her. I’m saying that you need a top recruiting assistant with experience and connections to the developmental leagues that the best young players are involved with. Of course NIL is an important factor now but if you don’t have a strong connection years before they head to college, you are behind. Assistants make their name and progression based on their recruiting ties and successes and it’s a grueling job many times on the road throughout the off season. They need to love and embrace that constant grind. Remember too, we lost an assistant, Sue Ludwig, who said she had to slow down for her health, that was in addition to Coach Jack’s health issue last summer. It had to affect recruiting - this is just her 3rd season at SU. It was a need we only just filled since we just hired this past July, Ty Evans, an experienced coach who is going to be our main recruiting guru. This is a great move but the fruit will take a little time to pay off. It was needed and hopefully we will see results in future recruiting. No one would be better to close recruiting efforts than Coach Jack and of course hoping NIL efforts will improve too.Welcome Ty to SU!

They will be 4 open spots next year, women had 15.

Thanks for correcting me! That makes the opportunity to get some bigs even better.....but, can we secure some? We literally need 4 Bigs! Now, everyone looks internationally, so there are no hidden gems there. Australia? We have great relationships there. Junior college and the Portal? We need to turn over every rock so to speak. Keep your eye on these last 4 spots, they will be very telling!

I agree with everything you have said and I hope coach Ty can give us something in recruiting that we have been missing. I think this last recruit that we signed, has his finger prints all over it and it will be interesting to see if she performs well above her offers! I may seem jaded, but NIL is the biggest game changer in recruiting and the cold honest truth of it is disturbing on many levels and is leading some old time coaches to a premature retirement.
