Hate to beat a (almost) dead horse but I saw this and shook my head. Wth is going on with this staff? I hope that this reporter simply got his facts wrong.

"... When asked if he had any regrets about how he informed McDonald of the demotion, Shafer said it wasn’t over the phone, although McDonald said Tuesday night that it was.

The head coach also said he had no regrets about the situation or how he informed McDonald. ..."

So which coach is telling the truth? Rediculous.

Syracuse football's Scott Shafer, George McDonald clarify that demotion discussion was in person (PS: Bailey)

Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer and wide receivers coach George McDonald clarified that their discussion on Saturday night in which Shafer told McDonald that he would be demoted from offensive coordinator/associate head coach, was in person at Manley Field House in separate phone calls to Syracuse.com on Wednesday.

McDonald said he was "misconstrued" on Tuesday night when he indicated that the decision was issued over the phone.

And I am fine with that.
I agree with you. Although this should've been coordinated earlier (as soon as Coach Shafer knew that he was going to demote or immediately thereafter). That's what makes it look bad, unprofessional and a bit late.

DG, Edson, (edit spelling) Giansante, HCSS, etc etc should have met by Sunday morning and had a media plan, team plan, etc, etc and all been on the same page from the get-go. Instead, most or all of Athletics seem to be bystanders. Until today. 3-4 days later.

The initial discussion between Shafer and McDonald happened Saturday, right? Were they going to announce the change in roles publicly? Do we know that for a fact?

Something leaked by Monday morning and the storm ensued. I'm not sure there needed to be meetings if they weren't planning on announcing it, and certainly not Sunday morning, when there might not have been any indication that damage control would be needed.

I respectfully disagree. This is too important to sit back and hope that nobody (not even a player or recruit) mentions it to the media by mistake or otherwise. You must assume the worst and have a plan for it. Probably also much better to get out in front of this news and have a cohesive strategy to deal with it.

Sitting around with your fingers crossed ain't gonna cut it. Somebody somewhere will find out about it. Maybe McD starts talking with other head coaches and their local media hears about it and reports it. Too tricky to think you can control the info 100%.

How did they handle it last year when Lester started going to the booth to assist?

Not sure what you mean. Was McD demoted last year (and promoted back to OC this year)?

He wasn't officially demoted, but bringing Lester up to assist is something that folks would pick up on. Did we announce that before it was done in a game?

Ah. Then I suppose Shafer could've opted for that approach again this time. But he didn't. He decided to demote vs assist, thus a different approach in Athletics might've been warranted as well.

It is what it is at this point and I hope that McD can stop talking and the team can focus on the task at hand moving forward. There's already plenty to worry about and work on.

I think this is a belated attempt to keep from actually firing McD before season ends. Damage control on McD shooting his mouth off.
Guy is a loose cannon but they may want to make the best of it to after this season. He needs to be told by the admin two things 1) no more tweets 2) no more press interviews, or you are done on the spot.

Does it really matter at this point?

Next we'll be discussing the controversial decision by Shafer to wear boxers rather than briefs on the day McD was demoted.

Couldn't resist. :)

It was announced that Lester would be in the booth but there was no mention of any role change or assisting in anything. Rumor was that Lester actually called the plays for the last 2 games of last season.

Didn't someone here mention that McDonald was prone to indecision and locked up in the booth a few times and Lester needed to take over.

Is it bad that I am almost looking forward to seeing the shzzzshow this Saturday?

**k it, let's do this firing live!!!
You know dam* well that if they charged $8.95 for this Pay Per View event you and a few buddies would pay it in a heartbeat.

So would I. Hey, I love this idea!
