I’ll admit I was never a big fan of the idea of Rick taking over once Boeheim “retired”, but after seeing how things have turned out, it was a no-brainer we should have attempted to get him. I know everyone says we had to hire within for Boeheim to step down somewhat gracefully, but I think he would have been supportive and on board with his close friend taking over for a few years to right the ship and transition. Seeing what he is doing at St. John’s (with Kadary nonetheless) can only make me wonder what if. Maybe we take a look at the younger Pitino (who’s doing quite well at New Mexico) when Autry inevitably is gone.

Don't hold your breath.

Hindsight is 20/20. While most people will agree Slick Rick is a basketball savant. I think many were way too
apprehensive about his past. We won’t even put up with an egotistical booster much less someone of Rick’s character.

I’d take him in a heartbeat, but also wouldn’t blame the university for not wanting him

Edit: that’s pretty much how I feel about taking Adam W’s money too.

There's so many good young coaches I don't know why anyone wants a retread.
Well the reason probably is that Pitino is one of the all time greatest coaches in college basketball. He teaches offense, defame, demands effort and accountability . Imagine him and Fran as a two headed fundraising face of the program monster. That ship has sailed much like the Oats and other ships. Go young and find a dynamic personality that actually has some coaching chops.

He said younger Pitino...NO way

You realize New Mexico is 19-4 and 1st in the Mountain West right? I know he didn’t work out at Minnesota (although he did take them to the NCAAs a couple times and won an NIT), but he has been just as impressive at New Mexico as Hodgson has been at Arkansas State. Make no mistake though: Hodgson would be my number 1 choice without a doubt. Just saying he is doing pretty damn well at a good program in New Mexico.

What aren't you people understanding? Coach K wouldn't win with this roster. There is bottom of the barrel talent here right now. To think kids would come here because Rick Pitino is coaching is moronic. They want money bags not dirtbags.

So what’s your solution or should we just pack it in as a program? NIL funds are what they are right now and they’re not going to get any better with Red as the coach, especially with how donors are seeing their current money being spent.

Rick Pitino ruined my Celtics. Like single-handedly drove that franchise into the ground.

He's a garbage human being and I wouldn't watch SU hoops if he were head coach.

He was my number one choice. We absolutely should have considered him and he would have kept Red as his top assistant.

I just hope we don’t miss out (like we did with Oats) by waiting because Hodgson will be coaching at a higher level next year.
Hope he's available in 3 years

I dont know if he will be a good coach at the P4 level or not that is always a gamble right...

But he is very energetic on the sidelines
A+ recruiter
Learned under Oats
Runs a modern offense
From the northeast

Checks a lot of similar boxes to Fran.

You keep putting blame everywhere but where it actually belongs.

A possible silver lining with Red coming back for a year is that it might give GMac enough time to show that he really IS worthy of the SU gig. I've watched some of the Siena games and I think it's safe to say that GMac has built an identity for that team from almost nothing. It'll be interesting to see what they do next year when he has something more to sell recruits and can acquire a few new pieces from the portal. I wouldn't be shocked if they went on a run this year though either.

If that happens, think a successful GMac coming from Siena would be something EVERYONE here would get behind. I was firmly against giving him or Red a shot the first time around, but he appears to be well on his way to proving himself.

Oh, and I have little doubt that the Melo camp would be anything but excited (except sad for Red, as we all are).

I agree that it would make alot of sense to look at him. Minnesota has rarely had a winning program (mostly a Big 10 afterthought) and he actually had them in a decent spot and made the tourney a couple of years. And he had success at the mid major level before Minnesota. His dad is one of the greatest college basketball coaches ever, and he no doubt learned a lot from him. Plus the Pitino family is very close with the Boeheims.

I want Rick. Posted this before. First game Dome is Dark.
Suddenly a single spot light shines down and there is Rick standing at center court dressed head to Toe in an Orange sequined Leisure suit.
The place goes berserk

Nick Saban didn’t do much with my Dolphins but I’d take him to lead the Orange in a heartbeat.
