Pitt Football receives $20 million gift from alumnus

So does that give Bickel carte blanche to hire and fire the head coach?
I know - this is kind of weird. A bit ego-centric too if you ask me…

Hey, give up that coin and you get… The Finwad32 Cuse message board poster ‘05 Head Coach brought to you by Upstate Shredding and AmeriCu does have a certain ring to it.

It's no different than any other endowed position. Lots of schools have them across their faculty, even within their athletic department (I'm too lazy to look up SU).

My question is that in the age of NIL, isn't just funneling that $20 mil directly to the players somehow better than donating to a school to build a giant pole building, throw some x-boxes into a locker, at a chic-fil-a to their dorm, etc.? I get there are probably tax implications though (both from the "donor" and the recipient).

I agree with 98% of what you’re saying… but I don’t think having your name before the HC’s is like any other endowed position. Every time Pat Narduzzi is listed on Pitt material, or any other Coach for that matter, I think it’s a bit odd to see Chris Bickell ‘97 Head Coach “x”…

I’ll be interested if when they show the staff on ESPN if it announces Nard dog as Chris Bickell ‘97 HC ….

You're aware that Gary Gait is currently the "Roy D. Simmons Jr. Head Men's Lacrosse Coach".
Clearly not… I thought that was just for the IPF and I find it equally as weird.

Edit - wrong again - The Ensley… I’m on fire today.

But isn't that honoring a legendary program building coach by naming the position of his successors after him? That seems different that essentially purchasing naming rights.

A huge donation was made in his name...

Syracuse's men's lacrosse head coaching position will now be called 'The Roy D. Simmons Jr. Head Men's Lacrosse Coach,' with Saturday's statue dedication serving as the culmination of a fundraising campaign to endow the position. Brett Jefferson '88 established the Men's Lacrosse Coaches Endowment to name the head coaching position after Roy Simmons Jr.

"The head coach of Syracuse men's lacrosse has been synonymous with excellence since the program's inception and no one exemplifies that more than Coach Simmons," said Director of Athletics John Wildhack. "The program has only featured four head coaches in its storied history. Three are in the Hall of Fame and Coach Desko has seamlessly continued that winning tradition. This endowment will help us ensure that Syracuse men's lacrosse continues to be a beacon of success."

To me it still feels different when it's named after the coach and not the donor. Maybe it's not though.

This is all way above my pay grade - let's get more realistic here

How much will it cost to get a pee trough named after me? And how much extra to get a picture of someone's face I don't like printed in the trough so everyone can pee on them?

This is really pretty common these days. This article is 9 years old:

I love that. My buddy while in his twenties had the new york yankees logo on the underside of the toilet bowl so when it was flipped up and he puked or pissed after hitting the bars the yankees logo would help facilitate the process. Huge Red Sox Fan.

I mean to me it's low hanging fruit we aren't grabbing

In all seriousness the school should be selling
naming rights to concession stands, pee troughs, stalls, entrance gates, box seats, suites, parking lots, sections

Get some revenue flowing in

Mr. Emeritus must have donated a lot of money to a LOT of people because I see his name eveywhere.

Cuse has been asking former Orange players to give money for meeting room seats, players individual lockers, coaches rooms, etc. and I’ll consider once we start winning again.

I might give some money to have my name as the first half of a player's name. Like "Dollarbill-Lutz". Or an entire squad, the "Dollarbill DBs"

Therein lies the rub, though. I will never presume to tell people how to spend their money, but if the money helps improve the program, it probably moves the needle more before the winning starts as opposed to after.
