There is no excuse for Clowney's actions this year. Every top tier football player in college that is looking at getting drafted Round 1 is faced with the same possibility of sustaining an injury. QBs Manziel, Mariotta, Bridgewater, and Tajh Boyd didn't sit, didn't give half effort, didn't fake injury. Yes, there was a lot of money on the line for each of them. Manziel could really only go down from where he was as the Heisman winner. Why play? Because they cared about winning and not losing. They each wanted to help their respective teams and they wanted to win. My true distaste for Clowney isn't based on his numbers this season. Others here have said he was triple teamed all year. That isn't remotely true. Double teamed at times sure, but that happens to most effective defensive linemen. In fact, he often faced one on one protection, but had plays run to the opposite side to keep him out of the play. Watching the Clemson game he was one on one almost the whole game. He isn't the first dominant lineman. We've had a couple here at Cuse. Freeney didn't give up a single damn play and stayed effective. My problem with Clowney is that he was out of shape, sat out games and gave half effort on lots of plays and didn't care about his team winning or losing. He's got the entourage already. My only hope is that the NFL teams penalize him for that in the draft recognizing that the kid will do the same thing in the NFL for them when he is unhappy with his contract or when the team is losing or just plain when he doesn't feel like playing. He's selfish. Heart and pride mean something in the NFL. He has none.
