Had Packer and Durham on as background noise while working from home office this morning. They were going through ACC football teams and naming the Player of the Decade for each. Spirited debate on Pitt between James Connor (the anointed pick) and Aaron Donald (more deserving IMHO.)

For Cuse they chose Dungey with some recency and offense bias. Then flipped it to ESPN Control where they asked a young Cuse grad to weigh in. His position was that the only other deserving candidate was Chandler Jones but he agreed with the Dungey pick.

Then one of the hosts (not sure which is Packer and which is Durham) asked "What about Terell Hunt?" Wow.

Wondering who else belongs in the conversation. I think a strong case can be made for Zaire Franklin but won't quibble with Dungey and Chandler being just a bit ahead.

Others?

Chandler didn't do very much statistically in a Cuse uniform. He wouldn't even be in my top 10.

Yep. Doesn't show up in the record books much. BTW, found this Wikipedia reference page with a few defensive statistics. Knew Jim Collins was the all time tackles leader but he really holds the single game record with FORTY TWO!!!!

I don't think I can even make an argument for another player. Dungey started 4 years, led us to a pretty good bowl game, had numerous memorable moments and a warrior mentality, all while setting records. Poor man's Tim Tebow in my eyes, which is pretty damn good.

On the defensive side I'm going Jay Bromley or Shamarko Thomas. Guys who made big impacts for multiple years, were the heart of the team and played in the NFL.

Ishmael was the only other player I remember having an impact on the game consistently year after year...that being said, it's hand down Dungey.

Dungey, hands down. Dude was a friggin warrior.

Put it this way... we would’ve lost alot more games without him. Singlehandedly won more than a handful.

Alec Lemon, Nassib, Pugh could be other offensive nominees.

Marquis Spruill, Zaire Franklin, Kendall Coleman, Alton Robinson and Parris Bennett on the defensive side.

I agree it has to be Dungey.

This topic really shouldn't make a Cuse fan sad...

Collins' numbers are simply off the charts. 624 lifetime tackles, 229 in a single season. Btw, those were 11 game seasons. Whaaaat?

Oh, Dungey.

This is the best run down I could think of and would only consider adding Chris Fred on the defensive side due to longevity, consistency along side some “impact moments”.

I think Ish and Irv due to consistency and Estime due to multiple impacts (including special teams) should be considered also

Weird for Syracuse that no running back makes the cut though Moe Neal had the best yards per carry since the Reyes days though (just not enough carries to show big overall yards)

...Jerome Smith was pretty awesome as a college player.
I know you’re not Moe’s biggest fan (been higher on Howard/Adams) but he has the highest career YPC since Reyes and has arguably had the worst Oline play during his tenure (0 NFL Oline draft picks).

Also is #9 in all time rushing yardage with part-time carries

Love Moe, but yeah I’ve always been big on Jarveon.

Moe’s significantly underrated but unfortunately the lack of an O line never allowed us to see what he was truly capable of.

Still of the mindset he could have taken over for Erv.

If he leads the last 15 years in YPC with an historically bad Oline (no Oline NFL picks) and is #9 all time in Yards whlle always taking part time carries (and a historically bad Oline) then I would argue he is held back by lack of carries more than anything

Also I actually agree he would have been more useful to us in the slot replacing Erv but that just amplifies his greatness that he may not even have played his best position with us and still ended up in the record books

Think it may be a consequence of the role the running back plays calling out coverages in Dino’s offensive scheme. Thats my only explanation. Dontae’s my all time favorite Orange running back, but there’s no arguing Moe was the better runner.

Feel like it’s gotta be playbook/scheme knowledge related.

I agree it’s clearly Dungey but we as a fan base undervalue Nassib. I think he is clear #2. 3. Pugh 4. Shamarko 5. Bromley 6. Ish 7. Franklin/Bennett combo 8. Jones 9. Lemon 10. Robinson. Heavy on 12 and 18 for obvious reasons. Spruill, Tiller, Provo, Conway, Servais, Phillips, Slayton, Hunt, and Hay in the Barn, all honorable mentions.

So I haven’t enjoyed a player as much as Dungey in years. He is my top followed very closely by Nassib. The difference really is the years played in the decade. Ryan did a ton for this program.

The fact Hunt was even mentioned shows how inspiring Syracuse has been overall from 2010-2020.

Has to be Dungey, and that's with no bias. We've had good players on defense, a number of which have already had longer careers in the pros, but nobody had more impact in a Cuse uniform than Dungey over the last decade.
