Playing for a hail mary with 45+s left and 2 timeouts at the 50

I didn't understand that sequence either. Shafer told the sideline reporter that he was playing for the hail mary, but a couple of another 15-20 yards would have put us in FG range.

probably didn't want to give dukes offense another shot

I can tell you exactly how that happened.

He decided well before it got to that point that the half would end with us throwing a Hail Mary. When conditions changed that would have allowed for a different ending with different decisions, he stuck with what he decided before.

We saw the same last week when we got better yardage than expected on a draw on 3rd down, lined up for the 4th and got NC State to burn a TO, then punted from the 37. The plan all along was to run the draw and then see what happened with the weird 4th down call, and we had no plan once the timeout was called. So, we punted.

I am worried that this is a pattern.

Right call in my opinion. It was 4th down. You go for it on the 50 and don't get it, Duke has time to get an FG. I was surprised Duke didn't call timeout to make us punt. The bad call was Duke not taking a timeout and giving us a chance at the Hail Mary.

I don't think so. They just weren't confident in Kimble and the Oline to take it that far - didn't want Kimble to turn it over in the process. When they didn't get the 1st playing conservatively (10-3 score) - they rightly didn't want to punt to Crowder, but didn't want to just end without a shot in the end zone.

If Long or Hunt were lined up at QB and they had a healthy line - the would have been more aggressive.

That all sounds reasonable.

But... if they are so afraid of Crowder why were they willing to play the field position game on punts?

And why are they so afraid of a turnover at that point? Just make sure it's down field.

he did the right thing and people still complain. the stupid thing was Duke not call a TO..
