Here are the first round match-ups in the 2014 State tournament: CLASS AA Section 1 - JOHN JAY EAST FISHKILL 9-1 (305-126, #8 NYSSWA #22/1271 MaxPreps, 0 titles) vs. Section 2 – SHENENDEHOWA 10-0 (422-81, #4 NYSSWA, #2/379 MaxPreps , 3 titles) Section 9- NEWBURGH FREE ACADEMY 8-2 (394-187, #13 NYSSWA ##13/979 MaxPreps, 0 titles) vs. BYE Section 3- HENNINGER 10-0 ((376-105, #5 NYSSWA, #5/418 MaxPreps, 1 title) Section 4- CORNING PAINTED POST 9-1 (377-174, unranked by NYSSWA, #39/2195 MaxPreps 1 title) Section 5- VICTOR 9-1 (246-118, #9 NYSSWA, #23/1322 MaxPreps , 0 titles) Section 6- JAMESTOWN 9-1 (364-111, #3 NYSSWA #6/506 MaPreps, 3 titles) Comment: I don’t see anybody scary out there. Shenendehowa’s titles were in the 80’s and Jamestown’s last was in 2000. Three teams have never won a state title. NYSSWA. Defenidng champion Acquinas had to forfeit a game in the sectional playoffs because of an ineligible player. #1 ranked Canisius High School of Buffalo doesn’t participate in the state playoffs. Neither does #2 Archbishop Stepinac of White Plains so Jamestown at #3 is the highest ranked team in the tournament but MaxPreps thinks Henninger is better, although they have them ranked behinds the sportswriter’s #4, Shenendehowa. But the Black Knights could certainly do some business here, if they can get by the jinx Section 4 has had over even our best teams in recent years. CLASS A Section 1- RYE 9-1 (340-235, #8 NYSSWA, #31/1842 NaxPreps, 3 titles) Section 9- CORNWALL 10-0 (434-51, #2 NYSSWA, #21/1269 Max Preps , no titles) Section 2- QUEENSBURY 10-0 (430-76 #1 NYSSWA, #11/826 MaxPreps 1 title) Section 10- MASSENA 5-4 (234-201 unranked by NYSSWA, #391/10,610, no titles) Section 3- INDIAN RIVER 10-0 (407-142, #5 NYSSWA, #26/1605 MaxPreps 2 titles in this section plus 6 in Secition 10) Section 4- UNION ENDICOTT 3-6 (157-204, unranked by NYSSWA, #170/6225, 2 titles) Section 5- iRONDEQUIOT 7-3 (270-174 #6 NYSSWA, #76/3617, no titles) Section 6- SWEET HOME 9-1 (391-146 #3 NYSSWA, #17/1148, 2 titles) Comments: Queensbury won its first state title last year but will be the odd-on favorite to repeat with an even stronger team. Their closest game was a 15 point win. Cornwall was similarly dominant in their section- their closest game was a 13 point win over Class B’s Marlboro. But section 9 has only won three state titles overall, only two in tournament play and never in this class. Sweet Home lost its opener to Class AA Jamestown 28-35 and has won every game since. They’ve one tow tiles and not that long ago (2008-09). #4 is Sayville of Long Island so they’re out. Then comes Indian River. I think they can handle Union-Endicott but getting by Sweet Home and Queensbury would be an uphill climb. CLASS B Section 1- OUR LADY OF LOURDES 8-1 (238-80, #4 NYSSWA #71/3296 MaxPreps, no titles) Section 9- MARLBORO 8-2 (339-146, #5 NYSSWA #63/2956 MaxPreps, no titles) Section 2- SCHALMONT 10-0 (599-55, #2 NYSSWA, #8/635 MaxPreps, 9 titles) Section 7- PERU 10-0 (398-99, #7 NYSSWA, #98/4347 MaxPreps, 1 title) Section 3- HOMER 10-0 (531-116, #3 NYSSWA, #14/1017 MaxPreps 1 titles) Section 4- MAINE-ENDWELL 10-0 (345-76, #1 NYSSWA, #4/412 MaxPreps 1 title) Section 5- BATAVIA 9-1 (351-153, #6 NYSSWA #29/1783 MaxPreps 1 title) Section 6- CHEEKTOWAGA 8-2 (328-206 #10 NYSSWA #64/2979 MaxPreps no titles) Comments: Let me correct information about Maine Endwell from a previous post. They have out-scored their opponents 345-76 and have won 48 games in a row and three straight state titles. They are not as dominant as last year when MaxPreps ranked them the #1 team in the state, even though they had a Class B enrollment while out-scoring 13 opponents by 581-156. They actually might be a little better on defense but are not as explosive on offense. Homer is and Cazenovia almost beat the Spartans last year, losing on a disputed goal-line call. So this should be a very interesting game. On the other side, watch out for Schalmont, who wiped out two teams by a combined 126-6, (the Marlboro game was 60-0 at halftime) before throwing a 21-22 scare into Maine-Endwell in the final. This year they’ve annihilated their opponents by an average of 60-6. They had one close game: 34-28 over Class A Burnet Hills-Ballston Lake. Their other scores have been 61-0, 69-7, 55-0, 59-0, 76-6, 88-0, (over Ichabod Crane - I kid you not!), 68-14, 49-0 and 40-0. Expect the same vs. Peru, (although they are probably better than last year’s Section 7 representative, Beekmantown), and maybe in the next round, as well. They will be a most formidable opponent for anyone in the final. CLASS C Section 1- WOODLANDS 4-4 (182-199, #12 NYSSSWA, #183/6412 MaxPreps, no titles) Section 9- MILLBROOK 7-2 (389-127, #9 NYSSWA, #110/4840 MaxPreps, no titles) Section 2- HOOSICK FALLS 10-0 (417-93, #4 NYSSWA #32/1843 MaxPreps, 1 title) Section 7- SARANAC LAKE 9-1 (297-130, #6 NYSSWA #165/6211 MaxPreps, no titles) Section 3- UTICA NOTRE DAME 9-1 (378-161, #5 NYSSWA, #52/2667 MaxPreps, no titles) Section 4- CHENANGO FORKS 9-1 (363-96, #1 NYSSWA, #19/1213 MaxPreps, 3 titles) Section 5- Le ROY 10-0 (478-104, #2 NYSSWA, #18/1204 MaxPreps, 1 title) Section 6- MAPLEGROVE/ CHAUTAUQUA LAKE 10-0 (407-37, #3 NYSSWA #8/2155 MaxPreps 2 titles) Comment: Chenango Forks, the defending champ, lost to Maine-Endwell, the three time defending champ in Class B, 7-20, so they are undefeated in this class. Obviously, they will be a formidable opponent for the Jugglers but so will the Le Roy-Maple Grove winner. Both are former state title winners who had dominant seasons in strong sections. On the other side, it was Hoosick Falls that ended Hornell’s 51 game winning streak in the finals two years ago, so watch out for them. CLASS D Section 1-TUCKAHOE 6-3 (248-122, #10 NYSSWA, #244/7740 MaxPreps, 2 titles0 Section 9- CHESTER 8-2 (453-126, #6 NYSSSWA, #167/6214 MaxPreps, no titles) Section 2- CAMBRIDGE SALEM 9-1 (470-77, #4 NYSSWA, #156/5889 MaxPreps, 1 title) Section 7- TICONDEROGA 7-3 (272-85, #11 NYSSWA, #233/1763 MaxPreps, no titles) Section 3- DOLGEVILLE 9-1 (391-131, #5 NYSSWA, #65/3055 MaxPreps, 1 title) Section 4- TIOGA 9-1 (448-107, #3 NYSSWA, #42/2338 MaxPreps, no title) Section 5- RED JACKET 10-0 (506-72, #2 NYSSWA #15/1027 MaxPreps no titles) Section 6- RANDOLPH 9-1 (372-56, #1 NYSSWA, #40/2220 MaxPreps, 4 titles) Comment: Randolph is a real powerhouse. They are going for their third straight state title and fourth in a decade. Just ask Tioga, who, after dominating Section 3 foes, lost to Randolph each of the last two years by a combined 12-42. The Cardinals lost their opener, 12-24 to Maple Grove, the section’s Class C champion. Randolph beat Red Jacket 49-0 last year but the Indians seem much stronger this year. They beat everybody they played by at least 35 points! Cambridge High, which was already pretty good, merged with Same High so they should have plenty of depth. Chester lost their first two games but are 8-0, 411-73, since. They beat Tuckahoe 26-21 last year and will be favored to do it again.
