SECOND ROUND
#1 NEW HAMPSHIRE had few problems with #12 Fordham. “Senior running back Nico Steriti scored four of the University of New Hampshire's six rushing touchdowns and a swarming defense came up with nine quarterback sacks to lead the No. 1 Wildcats to Saturday's 44-19 NCAA Division I FCS tournament second-round win over Fordham at a cold and damp Cowell Stadium.” (unhwildcats.com) Actually the Wildcats had perfect balance, rushing for 274 yards and passing for 270 more. Fordham, a potent offensive team, got only 330 yards. The Wildcat defense recorded nine sacks. Fordham quarterback Mike Nebrich completed only 12 of 230 passes for 161 yards and 1TD. Jimmy Owens ran 51 yards for a touchdown on the first play for the winners, who built up a 14-0 first quarter lead. Fordham responded with two field goals and a 91 yard run by Chase Edmunds but new Hampshire really took control with two touchdowns and a field goal to take a 31-12 lead early in the third quarter. Fordham score to make it 19-31 but Steriti’s last two scoring runs salted the game away.
#3 NORTH DAKOTA STATE was in considerable jeopardy against Missouri Valley Conference member South Dakota State but survived with their dreams of a fourth straight national title intact. The Bison got off to a 14-0 start but the Jackrabbits roared back to take a 17-14 lead Two NDS field goals gave them the lead at 20-17 Austin Sommer passed to Jake Wienke form 3 yards out to give SDS a 24-20lead with 3:18 left. But the northerners thrilled the Fargodome crowd by driving 76 yards in 8 plays to score the winner as RJ Urzendowski caught a 12 yard pass from Carson Wentz. Wentz passed for 235 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for 70 more and a score. John Crockett ran for 102 yards for the Bison but Zach Zenner took honors there for the Jackrabbits with 133 yards and 2 scores. Zenner finished with 6,548 career rushing yards, going over 2000 in each of the last three years. He also scored 61 touchdowns.
Another prolific player was #4 EASTERN WASHINGTON’S Vernon Adams was held to 182 yards and 2 touchdown passes in a 37-20 victory over ##11 Montana. Those are modest numbers for Adams who has passed for 10,013 yards and 107 touchdowns in his career. But it was Eastern’s defense that really won them this game. Playing on their red field, known as ”The Inferno”, held the potent Grizzlies to 347 yards and forced the games 3 turnovers, clinching the game with a 40 yard pick six with1:40 left in the game. Quincy Forte ran for 128 yards and a score for the winners. It was their second victory over Montana this year, having downed them 36-26 on the same, scary red field.
Our old pal, #5 VILLANOVA, downed #23 Liberty 29-22, scoring the game’s last 15 points. “The game-winning drive was for 84 yards and Villanova ran the ball on every single play of the drive.” (villanova.com) John Robertson went over form the 1 for the winning score with 1:12 left in the game. Liberty took a 13-0 lead, fell behind 13-14 and then took the lead on a on a 58 yard fumble recovery just before halftime, 19-14. But all they could muster in the second half was a field goal. Physically the Wildcats dominated, 447 yards to 246. Robertson ran for 100 yards and a score and passed for 217 more and 2 scores.
#6 COASTAL CAROLINA DOWNED #16 Richmond 36-15. “Coastal totaled 487 total yards, including 316 on the ground. While the CCU offense scored 36 points, the defense was key to the win. Richmond entered the game first in the NCAA FCS in third-down conversions and ninth in passing yards. However, Coastal held the Spiders to 2-of-13 on third downs and just 216 yards through the air on 14-of-33 passing, through three quarters.” (goccusports) The Chanticleers, (a great team name) bullied their way to a 21-0 lead and the Spiders (another good one), never got to within 13 points.
I thought #10 Northern Iowa was a team to really watch out for. They’d ended North Dakota State’s 33 game winning streak resoundingly, 23-3 and were also the only team to beat #7 ILLINOIS STATE, 28-42. But the Redbirds were lying in wait for them and scored on their first three drives to take a 24-0 lead, going onto win 41-21. The Redbirds out-gained the Panthers 564-335. Tre Roberson passed for 382 yards and 4 touchdowns. Marshaun Coprich ran for 148 yards and a score. Having erased their only defeat the redbirds should prove to be a most formidable opponent for anyone.
#8 CHATTANOOGA beat #21 Indiana State 35-14 to advance to the semi-finals. The Moccasins controlled the ball for 43 minutes, more than 71% of the game running 87 plays to the Sycamore’s 45. It’s hard to score when you don’t have the ball but you have plenty of chances to do it when you run twice as many plays. Defense was again the key as Chattanooga held ISU to only 178 yards while gaining 503, 394 from quarterback Jacob Huesman, who ran for 153 and passed for 241. It was the Moc’s first ever post-season win.
#19 SAM HOUSTON STATE upset #2 Jacksonville State 37-26 in a wild, back and forth game that went: 0-7, 7-7, 7-14, 14-14, 14-20, 21-20, 21-23, 24-23, 24-26, 30-26 and then the final. Jacksonville actually had the best of the yardage, 513-402. They also had more return yards 160-92. But they had two key interceptions that were the only turnovers of the game. And Sam Houston bunched their yardage better, getting 25 first downs to 22 and 37 points to 26. It’s not just what but when. DeMarcus James rushed for 128 yards and a score and Eli Jenkins passed for 253 yards and another score for Jacksonville. The Bearkats didn’t have a 100 yard rusher but Jared Johnson had 85 yards and a score and Jalen Overstreet almost the same numbers, 83 yards and a score. Johnson also threw for 161 yards but got 3 touchdowns out of it. The Bearkats are coached by KC Keeler who took Rowan to five D3 finals and Delaware to three FCS finals, winning the 2003 national championship.

Comment: Having disposed of my old sleeper, Illinois State is my new sleeper. They should make an interesting match-up with Eastern Washington. The Red Birds playing on the red turf of Roos Field. I’m a long-time North Dakota State fan, as I’ve explained in prior years but I wouldn’t mind that Villanova team we beat in the Dome winning it all. Then there’s New Hampshire who has never won a title but is looking awfully good this year.
