QUARTERFINALS

Cumberlands downed St. Francis 28-14 behind a 270 yard rushing performance by D’Angelo Jordan, including a 64 yard bolt to score at the beginning of the second half. Quarterback Adam Craig ran for another 117 yards and passed for 83 while producing a touchdown either way. The Patriots opened the game with a goal line stand and a 99 yard scoring drive. The winners led 21-7 at the half and gained 498 yards, 399 on the ground.

Grand View used a 23 point second period to turn around a game against Tabor after a 0-14 first quarter deficit. After taking a 30-14 halftime lead, they cruised to a 44-24 win. Two turnovers had led to the early deficit but the Vikings rolled for 498 yards, 221 on the ground and 297 through the air. Derek Fulton threw for those 297 yards and 4 touchdowns and Mike Perez ran for 132 yards and another score. Tabor came in averaging 329 yards rushing a game and got only 68.

Perennial power Carroll is going to the semi-finals for the 12th time in the last 14 years after beating Missouri Valley 27-3. MVC had the #1 ranked defense in the NAIA, giving up 213.5 yards per game, only 64 on the ground. Carroll gained 336/117 and shut down the Vikings, holding them to 177 yards, 62 on the ground and just that lone field goal. The game stated as a battle of field goals, with Carroll leading 6-3 at the half and 13-3 after three periods. Two fourth quarter touchdowns, the last on an interception return, clinched it. “Carroll’s a good team,” Missouri Valley quarterback Zack Dorton said. “We haven’t played a team like that all year long, so that kind of shocked us.” (Helena Independent record.)

Morningside’s Ryan Kasdorf passed for 222 yards and 5 touchdowns and ran for 99 more in a 36-28 win over Baker. Joel McCabe caught three of those TD passes, all in the first half as the Mustangs built up a 28-21 halftime lead. Baker quarterback Jake Morse also had a big day, passing for 417 yards and 3 scores. The third of those pushed Baker to within 34-28 but Morningside pinned the Wildcats on their own 2 with a punt and Morse was trapped in the end zone on the enxt play to close out the scoring.

The semi-final match-ups:

CARROLL (Montana) 12-1 (471-196) #3, 40-18-1 (6) at

CUMBERLANDS (Kentucky) 12-0 (559-228) #1, 4-6 (0)

MORNINGSIDE (Iowa) 11-1 (591-220) #5, 12-9 (0) at

GRAND VIEW (Iowa) 12-0 (453-192) #2, 2-1 (0)

Comment: They are all good teams and Cumberlands and Grand View are undefeated and higher ranked but my tendency is to go with teams that have been there before. Carroll kind of defines the NAIA these days with all the schools that have left for the NCAA and Morningside lost last year’s final by a field goal in overtime.
