Ryan Retzlaff caught 11 passes for 160 yards and a score. The tam then traded scores before SOU closed it out with two straight to end the contest, Dodge hitting Ryan Retzlaff from 46 and running ti in from the 1. The Red Hawks had the yardage edge, big time: 643-430. The Cougars just couldn’t stop them. SOU had ten scoring drives: eight touchdowns and two field goals.
#7 MARIAN handled high-scoring and fourth ranked Morningside 41-21 by forcing five turnovers. “Despite the loss, Morningside running back Brandon Wegher set the NAIA single-season rushing record with 151 yards and two touchdowns. He ends the season with 2,610 rushing yards, 106 yards more than the previous record of 2,504 set by Northwestern’s (Iowa) Dave Perrigo in 2000….for Marian, running back Tevin Lake led the charge with a season-high 159 yards on 36 carries, including a pair of 1-yard touchdown scampers. The four-year starter has run for more than 1,000 yards in every season at Marian and with today’s performance boasts 5,377 career yards – seventh most on the NAIA’s career rushing list…Overall, the Knights held a 530-497 advantage in total yards.” Morningside got off to a great start, taking a 21-7 lead on two Wegher touchdowns of 14 and 63 yards. It was all Marian after that, 34-0, Lake scoring twice, both 1 yard plunges.
The Finals match-up:
SOUTHERN OREGON 12-2 (630-393), lost to Carroll 40-42 and Eastern Oregon 27-31. Ranked #8, post season record 8-6 (0 titles)

MARIAN (Ind) 11-2 (444-232), lost to St. Xavier 38-65 and Robert Morris 7-20. Ranked #7, post season record: 10-2 (1 title) at
Comment: Has it come to this? Can a team give up 400 points and win a championship? Marian, who won the title two years ago, handled Morningside, who had scored 700 points. They won’t be intimidated by a team that has scored only 630. Southern Oregon is on a roll but so is anyone who made it this far.
How they got here:
First Round:
#7 MARIAN easily beat #10 Georgetown of Kentucky, 34-3. “Tevin Lake rushed for two scores, Hayden Northern threw two TDs and the hosts had no difficulty ending the Tigers' season in first round of the NAIA playoffs. Marian (9-2) only outgained Georgetown by 52 yards (255-203), but forced six Tigers turnovers.” (Kentucky.com) The Tigers were held to 25 yards rushing and got sacked for 55 yards for s net of -30. Quarterback Neal Pawsat was intercepted four time by the Knight’s aggressive defense.
#8 SOUTHERN OREGON topped #9 Mid-America Nazarene 44-26. The Raiders pulled away from a 20-17 halftime lead Quarterback Austin Dodge threw for 311 yards with 3TD passes and set an NAIA career record for completions with 1,169. Sean Tow rushed for 124 yards. They outgained the Pioneers 540-342.
Quarterfinals:
#8 SOUTHERN OREGON won another shoot-out with #1 Carroll of Montana, the rubber match in this case, as these teams played twice during the regular season. All three games were high scoring and close.
Again, Carroll went into the fourth quarter with a substantial lead, this time 35-18. But this time they couldn’t answer enough of Southern Oregon’s fourth quarter scores. Dodge passed 43 yards to Dylan Young at 14:51 and then ran the two point conversion in to make it 26-35. Mason scored form 6 yards out at 7:55 to tighten it up further at 33-35. They then took the lead as Sean McShane caught a 36 yard pass from Dodge. A conversion pass failed but it was 39-35 with 4:38. Carroll finally responded when Mac Roche ran over the goal line from 5 yards out with 1:38 left. A kick made it 42-39. For the second straight of these games, Southern Oregon scored with 22 seconds left, Melvin Mason going over form the one. The kick was no good, leaving the Raiders vulnerable. Mason only rushed for 51 yards but scored 4 times. Rinker rushed for 177 yards and 2 scores. Austin Dodge passed for 470 yards and 3 scores. Mac Roche had 287 yards and 1 score. Ryan Retzlaff had 13 catches for 175 yards but didn’t score. Neither did his brother matt, who had 6 catches for 103 yards. But Dylan Young had 5 catches for 106 yards and he did score twice. Anthony Clarke had 6 catches for 102 yards while Kyle Griffith had 6 catches for 130 yards and also didn’t score. The game was played in a snowstorm, but it made no difference to the teams who had their highest score of the series and the most yards with SOU outgaining Carroll 660-453.
#2 ranked Grand View, the defending NAIA champions, also lost, going down hard to #7 MARIAN, 6-34. But it wasn’t a shocker as Marian had also won their regular season match-up, 31-17. 65-23 is pretty convincing. The Knights forced four turnovers, three of them interceptions. “Marian quarterback Hayden Northern continued his consistent play in the playoffs, recording 258 yards passing and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Anthony Jones Jr. tied his career-high with nine catches for 135 yards.” (NAIA.org) Tevin Lake rushed for 95 yards to push his career total to 5,128.
Then came the semi-finals, described above.
