And that was one the few competitive games. The winders totaled 738 points, (46 per games) to 226, (14 per game). Looking at these scores and also the point totals during the regular season of the top teams suggest to me that the range from the best to the worst in this division, or even the best to the pretty good, is wider than in other divisions. Schools like Mount Union and Whitewater, who have won the last ten national championships between them, seem to belong in another division. These schools can’t offer scholarships but that doesn’t prevent them from building facilities and doing some informal recruiting that opponents can’t match. Other schools- the ones who have to face them in the playoffs, year after year, do similar things to compete with them. The results are blowouts like we see above this, including undefeated teams losing by scores like 21-51, 20-52 and 0-48, the sort of scores you’d expect they might lose to if they played teams on another level. Perhaps they were. What are the possible solutions? One is something I’ve said I would like to see: combine Divisions 2 and 3 with the NAIA to give these teams the sort of competition they deserve. Whitewater player Morningside, an NAIA powerhouse averaging 62 points a game held on to win a wild one, 33-30. Another would be to create a Division 4 for teams who acknowledge they can no long compete with these schools that are emphasizing the game so much. A third would be to move teams from one division to another based on their record of dominating or failing to compete in the division they are in, like they do in the English soccer leagues. Or they could just have Mount Union and Whitewater continue to meet for the title as they have been doing virtually every year for a decade.. Second Round Match-ups ST.
