FIRST ROUND GAMES

#2 MINNESOTA-DULUTH defeated #6 Northwest Missouri, the defending national champs 25-21 in a game that obviously shouldn’t have been a first round game. These are two D2 heavyweights who have won 6 national championships between them. The Bearcats took a 21-6 lead in the third quarter. “Northwest Missouri State, had a chance to perhaps put the game away late in the third quarter, but failed to score on four tries from inside UMD's four-yard line.” (UMDbulldogs.com) Drew Bauer began the comeback with a 14 yard TD run 10:15 into the fourth quarter, then a 26 yard strike to Beau Bofferding with 5:54 gone. After Northwest went three and out for the second straight time, the Bulldogs took over at their own 30 with 4:18 left. They went on a 10 play drive that ended with Bauer running it in from the 2 with 26 seconds left in the game. They tried for two on their last two scores but failed, creating some drama but four Bearcat plays failed to produce a score. Bauer ran for 131 yards and 2 scores and passed for 106 yards and 2 scores.

#5 PITTSBURG STATE won a wild one over #13 Harding, 59-42. Harding jumped out to a 21-0 lead , scoring after an opening fumble and on 70 and 81 yard runs by Romo Westbrook. But the Gorillas, (my favorite team nickname0, came roaring back with three scores before halftime. Anthony Abenoja ran for a touchdown and passed for two more, the second tying the game on a 19 yard pass to Gavin Lutman with 26 seconds left in the half. In the third quarter, they took the lead on a 21 yarder to Austin Panko and extended it with a 312 yard pass from wideout Bradley Argabright to Panko off a double reverse. “ Pittsburg State’s defense forced four Harding turnovers, including three second-half fumbles. All-MIAA defensive end Heath Wilson picked up the last one and raced 28 yards for a touchdown and a 59-35 lead.” (kansascity.com ) Abenoja finished 25 of 45 for 279 yards and four touchdowns.

#15 WEST CHESTER beat fellow Pennsylvania conference member, unranked Slippery Rock 46-20 after building up a 32-6 halftime lead. “The Rock entered the contest averaging 231 yards per game, but West Chester held them to just 31 net rushing yards. Before the half, when the outcome of the contest was still in question, the Rock had 52 yards passing, -17 yards rushing for just 35 yards of total offense. It was truly a remarkable accomplishment by the West Chester D.” (Golden Ram Football Club) The Ram’s Sean McCartney passed for 405 yards and 5YDs in the rout. (Paul must be proud.)

#9 OHIO DOMINICAN defeated #17 Colorado Mines 34-23. “The Panthers won despite being outgained 519-422. The Orediggers (10-2), which average 88 plays per game on offense, had the ball for 108 plays and 33:22. (oihiodominican.edu) The Orediggers scored first but the Panthers came back with a 1 yard run after a 49 yard pass play, 68 yard TD pass, a 46 yard field goal and a 4 yard run, set up by a 35 yard punt return to take a 24-10 halftime lead. Mines never got within 8 points after that. A 29 yard scamper down the sidelines by Brandon Shoen gave the Dominicans a 34-16 lead with 6:55 left. Ines scored on a 10 yard pass from Justin Dvorak to Cole Spurgeon with 3:07 left and got the ball back but the game ended on an incomplete pass. Dvorak was 42 for 71 for 409 yards but only two scores. Schoen gained 112 yards and scored twice while Mark Miller threw for 313 yards for the winners, thus accounting for 98% of the winner’s offense.

#21 VALDOSTA STATE upset #21 North Alabama 33-31 in a battle of former three time champions. State ran for a school record 395 yards and had 629 yards total offense but still needed four field goals from Anthony Pistelli to win. North Alabama opened the scoring with an 88 yard bomb and then set up another score with a 58 yarder to take a 14-3 lead. Drives of 66 and 85 yards gave the Blazers a 17-14 halftime lead. North Alabama fumbled on the Blazer’s 1 yard line in the third but recovered a fumble and took the lead back on a 6 yard pass from Luke Wingo to Lamonte Thompson. Valdosta responded with a 1 yard run by Jake Medlock and North Alabama responded to that with a 3yard pass from Wingo to Ryan Harper. From then on it was up to Pistelli kicked a 52 yarder to pull the blazers within one at 26-27, then 32 and 18 yarders for the win. “Wingo passed for 511 yards in the game as he completed 30-of-37 passes, but his final pass of the game was intercepted by Kenny Murphy to allow the Blazers to run out the clock.” (vstateblazers.com) Austin Scott had 184 yards rushing for State but did not score. Medlock had 116 yards and scored twice.

#24 ANGELO STATE won another wild one over #18 Michigan Tech, 42-41. It was a case of alternate quarters as Tech won the first, 14-0 and the third 14-7 but lost the second, 7-14 and the fourth 6-21. The difference was two slip-ups by Tech kicker Garrett Mead, who missed an extra point when it bounced off the upright and then missed what would have been a game-winning field goal wide right from the 26 on the game’s last play. The game looked like a blow-out when Tech took a 21-0 second quarter lead but Angelo state had one of the top offensives in the division. The Rams scored twice in the last 6 minutes of the half, one on a 40 yard pass play. Tyler Scarlett, (love the name) threw 18 yards to Ian Weinke, (don’t love the name), to give the Huskies a 28-14 lead but on the next play from scrimmage Talon Smith took a short pass and outran everybody to the goal line, 88 yards to pull Angelo back within a score. Charlie Leffingwell, who ran for 236 yards and 3 scores, went 64 yards to make it 35-21. State came back with a 73 yard scoring drive but Brandon Cowie made a specular catch, leaping over the goal line to push it back to two touchdowns with 8:42 left. But Mead, who won two games for Tech this year with field goals, missed the extra point. The Rams came back with a 2 yard run by Ryan Byrd at 5:42 and a 50 yard TD pass to Smith at 3:31. The Huskies drove down the field and mead came out to try to win it but missed and helmets were thrown in frustration. “"We win as a team and lose as a team," said Tech coach Tom Kearly. "This is not on Garrett. He's a big reason we're in this position. No kicker is 100 percent. He missed it, and not by much." (michigantechhuskies.com). This page has a great highlight film of this dramatic game:

#25 WEST GEORGIA beat unranked Tuskegee 20-17. The Wolves took a 13-0 halftime lead, surviving a late drive by the Golden Tigers by recovering a fumble on their own 1 yard line. Tuskegee pushed it to within 10-13 early in the fourth quarter. Dallas Dickey hit Shaq Hall with a 27 yard TD pass with 9:20 to go to make it 20-10. The teams traded three punts but the third bounced off a WG player and became a fumble, (my least favorite rule: you should have to possess the ball to lose possession). Tuskegee marched in and score on a two yard run by the wonderfully named Michael Thor, (Odin is their offensive coordinator). They tried an onsides kick but touched the ball too early, giving the ball to west Georgia who was the 1982 Division 3 champs.

VIRGINIA STATE topped LIU-Post 28-17 in a battle of unranked teams. Post overcame an 83 yard pick six to take a 17-14 halftime lead but State controlled the second half. Kavon Bellamy scored on a 1 yard plunge to take the lead in the 3rd quarter and then did the same to extend it to the final score in the fourth. Bellamy ran for 141 yards on 29 carries.

Comments: The second round brings in the teams that had the byes and five of them are unbeaten. #1 Minnesota State vs. #5 Pittsburg State is another game that’s happening too early. West Georgia and Delta State will be a rematch of a regular season game. Concord is searching for it’s first ever post season win after 9 losses, (which is why an 11-0 team is ranked as low as #10). Ten of these 16 teams have never won a title before.

(Again) I finished this so late that these games have already been played. I will be covering the details next week but here are the scores:
Minnesota State 24 Pittsburg State 21
Minnesota-Duluth 48 Ouachita Baptist 45
Valdosta State 23 Lenoir Rhyne 21
