SECOND ROUND
#1 WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER thumped #14 Wabash 38-14. The game was only 10-7 at halftime but a 28-7 second half sealed the Warhawks 29th win in a row. Whitewater out-gained Wabash, 479-234. Matt Behrendt passed for 299 yards and 4TDs. Justin Howard caught 6 passes for 126 yards and three of those scores. Dennis Moore ran for 107 yards but didn’t score.
#10 LINFIELD upset #2 Mary Hardin-Baylor, 31-28. Turnovers were the difference. The Wildcat’s first score was on a fumble return and they preserved the lead in the fourth quarter with a pass interception on a third down form their own 18. In between it was a back and fourth game with Linfield leading at 7-0, 14-7 and 17-14 before the Crusaders took the lead at 21-17. “Sam Riddle touchdown passes of 57 yards to Erick Douglas III and 23 yards to Charlie Poppen on the next two drives to take the largest lead of the game at 31-21. Riddle threw both of those passes into the teeth of a strong southerly wind.” (D3football.com) Kamray Runnels tightened it up with a 56 yard punt return late in the third but neither team could score in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats won the yardage battle, 418-329.
#3 MOUNT UNION had another walk-over against Washington and Jefferson. It was 2 against 11 and the 11 won, 67-0. The Purple Raiders have won their two playoff games by a combined 130-3. (But neither of the opponents was Whitewater.) This game was 45-0 at halftime, thanks to a 38 point second quarter. Mount Union gained 703 yards to 252. Kevin Burke threw for 402 yards and 6 touchdowns that went to four different receivers. Jamal Johnson rushed for 118 yards and a score.
#4 WESLEY out-smarted MIT 59-0. They got 35 points in the first quarter, thanks in aprt to a pick 6 and a blocked punt return, and led at halftime by an even larger margin than Mount Union, 49-0. The engineers were not only out-gained 206-547 but helped out with 6 turnovers. Joe Callahan threw for 268 yards and 4 TDs. “Callahan now has 43 touchdown strikes on the year while completing 67 percent of his passes for 3,435 yards.” (D3football.com)
#5 WARTBURG downed #13 St. John’s of Minnesota 21-10. In contrast to the above games, all the scoring came in the second half. Down 7-10 with 14:10 left in the game. Wartburg put on two scoring drives to win it, on of 612 yards, the other of 84 yards. Logan Schrader, the winning quarterback, was only 13 for 26 for 87 yards but he ran for 119 yards and produced a touchdown by each method. Brandon Domeyer added 106 yards rushing and another score. “The Johnnies were without junior running back Sam Sura (South St. Paul, Minn.), the 2014 MIAC Most Valuable Player and a Gagliardi Trophy semifinalist, for most of the game after he dislocated his right shoulder on his first carry. He attempted to play through the injury before leaving the game after the Johnnies' second possession and finished with 17 yards on three carries.” (D3football.com)
#6 JOHN CARROLL slipped by #8 Wheaton by the difference between their rankings, 14-12. Both halves were 7-6. “John Carroll appeared to have the game wrapped up with a block on a 46-yard field goal attempt with just over a minute remaining. Wheaton's Sam Cote earned a second chance when the Blue Streaks were flagged for being offside. After Cote's 41-yard attempt sailed wide left John Carroll ran out the clock to win 14-12.” (D3football.com) Wheaton was ahead in yard 345-338. Heir problem was a missed extra point and failed two point conversion intended to make up for it. Mark Myers threw for 229 yards and a score. But it wasn’t a game for big numbers.
#9 HOBART topped #7 Johns Hopkins, 24-21 in Geneva, NY. The Statesmen tied their school record for victories to go 12-0, giving them a three year record of 35-2, but they have never gotten past the quarterfinals. The first half was dominated by the wind, with the home team winning the first quarter 10-0 and the visitors the second 6-14. The third quarter was scoreless. The Blue Jays took the lead 27 seconds into the fourth quarter when Braden Anderson connected with Quinn Donaldson for the second time, this time on a 28-yard scoring play. Hobart gave up the ball on downs, (they were 2 for 5 on fourth down plays), but recovered a bad Hopkins pitch on their own eight. “Patrick Conlan then directed a nine-play, 88-yard march to reclaim the lead. He was 6-for-6 passing on the drive, including a 14-yard TD pass to senior wideout John Fasano with 1:26 remaining. Conlan completed a pass to senior wideout Elvin Souffrant for the 2-point conversion to put the Statesmen in front 24-21. Anderson moved Johns Hopkins back into the red zone in short order. With 24 seconds to go, Anderson hit Donaldson again for 8 yards and what appeared to be the go-ahead score, but the Blue Jays were flagged for pass interference and backed up to the Hobart 22. On the next play, Stanley intercepted Anderson to clinch the victory.” (D3football,com) Hobart won the yardage battle 389-361. Conlan passed for 237 yards and a score.
#11 WIDENER beat unranked Christopher Newport 37-27, surviving two last touchdowns by the Captains. Neither team could run the ball much so the game was decided through the air. Seth Klein passed for 268 yards and 2 scores for the winners while Marcus Morrast had virtually identical numbers for CN: 269 yards and 2 scores. But Morrast threw 45 passes to get there while Klein threw only 29, completing 72% compared to 56%. A 30-3 run in the middle of the game decided it for the Pride. Daquan Davis ran 31 yards for a score at 8:16 of the fourth and Morrast found Rudy Rudolph form three yards our at 4:24 to take it from 13-37 to 27-37 but that’s as far as the Captains got. Anthony Davis caught 13 passes for 146 yards for the winners but never found the end zone.

Comment: Everybody’s waiting for Whitewater-Mount Union VIII but watch out for John Carroll, who threw a scare into the Purple raiders the last time they met. Also watch out for Wesley, a perennial contender who probably has their best ever team. Also watch out for Linfield who has quite a history of their own and just took down #2. Wartburg has an unglamorous history and name but they have good numbers, too.
