Comments: Sioux Falls won their four titles in the NAIA (1996 in DII and 2006, 08-09 in the recombined NAIA). They are trying to see if their success can carry over to the NCAA tournament. They lost in the first round last year, their first in this tournament. Some former NAIA champs are in DII and some in DII. Texas A&M Commerce won an NAIA title as East Texas State in 1972. In the DIII tournament, Linfield and St John’s (Minn) are both former NAIA champs. In FCS, Central Arkansas won three NAIA Division 1 titles in the 80’s and 90’s and Sam Houston state won a share of one in 1964.

Northwest Missouri has been the dominant power in this division in recent years, winning titles in 1998-99, 2009, 2013 and 2015. They will be favored again this year. Grand Valley State was the dominant team in the previous decade, (sparked by Brian Kelly’s tenure there), winning over NW Missouri in the 2005 and 2006 finals before losing to them in the 2007 semis and the 2009 finals, (they also won in 2002-03). If those two teams met this year to renew old acquaintances, it would be in the semi-finals. North Alabama was the big power in the 1990’s, winning three straight titles from 1993-95.
