Here is the field for the NCAA Division II playoffs, with the team name, the state they are in, (if it’s not already part of the name), the won-loss record, the points for and against, who they lost to, their ranking, their all-time post season record, (including NAIA and other NCAA divisions and small college bowl games), and championships won, (I’ve included Black College National Champions per the Sheridan and American Sports Wire Polls). Division II runs a 24 team playoff with the top 8 teams getting byes the first week. The first round has already taken place so I will concentrate on the teams that are in the second round.

MINNESOTA STATE-MANKATO 11-0 (478-159) #1, 5-6 (0)
They had a first round bye.

NORTHWEST MISSOURI 11-0 (505-176) #2, 35-14 (3)
They had a first round bye.

COLORADO STATE-PUEBLO 11-0 (482-204) #3, 1-2 (0)
They had a first round bye.

MINNESOTA-DULUTH 11-1 (519-178) #4, 12-6 (2)
Lost to Minnesota State-Mankato (11-0) 17-21 on 9/21

They beat Emporia State of Kansas (9-2) 55-13 in the first round. The Bulldogs broke a 13-13 second period tie with 42 straight points, the first four scores coming in the second quarter to end any halftime suspense at 41-13. Freshman quarterback Drew Bauer ran for 173 yards and four scores. Austin Sikorski ran for another 122 yards and a score and Steve Lerulli added two third quarter scores. The Bulldogs out-gained the Hornets 511-171 and out-rushed them 476 to -2. Ouch!

SHEPHERD of West Virginia 10-0 (393-133) #6, 7-11 (0)
They had a bye in the first round.

OHIO DOMINICAN 10-0 (390-165) #7, 1-1 (0)
They had a bye in the first round.

WINSTON-SALEM of North Carolina 10-1 (424-174) #8, 7-9 (2)
Lost to UNC Pembroke (9-1) 21-25 on 9/5, (then won 10 in a row)

They beat Slippery Rock of Pennsylvania (9-3) 27-20 in the first round. The Rams cut a wide swath through the Pennsylvania conference last year, beating Shippensburg and Indiana in the playoffs and they got another one, topping the “Rock” thanks to the #1 defense in the country which held a team averaging 45 points per game to 210 total yards. Rudy Johnson threw for 315 yards and 3 scores for the winners, offsetting 3 interceptions that helped keep it close. The Rock’s quarterback, Nigel Barksdale, who had passed for 4000 yards this year was benched for the first quarter for disciplinary reasons and never got into a rhythm, throwing three interceptions of his own while throwing for only 67 yards. The Rams had an amazing 17 penalties for 155 yards, which helped keep the Rock within range. But they couldn’t move the ball enough to close the gap after falling behind 13-27.

BLOOMSBURG of Pennsylvania 10-1 (436-236) #10, 7-8 (0)
Lost to Shippensburg of Pennsylvania (7-4 ) 18-34 on 10/31.

They beat Henderson State of Arkansas (11-1) 40-35 in the first round. The Huskies were outgained 477-619 but pulled off the upset by forcing 6 turnovers. Henderson, (they are called the “Reddies”) quarterback Kevin Rogers threw for 567 yards and 4TDs but it wasn’t enough. St. Cloud’s Michael Walker ran for two scores and threw for a third. The Huskies managed to close out the game with 3 first downs in the last 3:19 with Rogers and his mates on the bench.

The Rams returned the opening kickoff 54 yards to set up a score than then the Yellow Jackets returned the favor by running one back 66 yards to set up and answering score. The rest was all West Chester. Sean McCartney threw for 423 yards and 4 scores, one of them a 94 yarder. The Rams outgained the Jackets 505-218.

They beat Indianapolis (10-2) 27-14 in the first round. The Buffalos scored 90 points in one game this season but used their defense to slow down the Greyhounds, whose quarterback, Connor Barthel, came in with the nation’s best pass completion percentage at 75%. He completed only 19 of 37 for 190 yards and two scores with one pick. Dustin Vaughn threw for 320 yards and three scores for the winners.

NORTH ALABAMA 9-2 (441-202) #18, 30-14 (3)
Lost to Jacksonville State of Alabama (FCS, 9-3) 21-24 on 9/14 and Delta State of Mississippi (7-3) 34-37 on 9/21

They beat Tuskegee of Alabama (8-3) 30-27 in the first round. They led 24-17 at the half, gave up a tying score but then answered quickly with pass plays of 61 and 36 years for what turned out to be the winning score. Tuskegee got a third quarter field goal but nothing else as the fourth quarter was scoreless. The winning Lions were outgained 332-345. Luke Wingo threw for two touchdowns and ran for another for the winners.

This time they jumped out on top 21-0 and held on to win by 10. The Eagles gained 544 yards to 341. Corey Washington of Newberry got kickoff returns of 82 and 95 yards and a 60 yard TD pass to keep it close. D’Andre Thomas scored three times for the winners.

GRAND VALLEY STATE 10-2 of Michigan (473-279) #23, 40-12 (4)
Lost to Ohio Dominican (10-0) 14-57 on 9/28 and Ferris State of Michigan (8-3) 44-54 on 10/12

They beat Saginaw Valley of Michigan (9-3) 40-7 in the first round. They’d beaten the Cardinals 49-34 a week before in the team’s regular season finale. The Lakers opened the scoring with a 53 yard double reverse and never looked back. Heath Parling threw for 205 yards and 3TDs. Total offense was somewhat close, 405-307 but three interceptions hurt Saginaw.

SECOND ROUND MATCH-UPS:

Minnesota State-Mankato vs. St. Cloud State
Northwest Missouri vs. Minnesota-Duluth
Colorado State-Pueblo vs. Grand Valley State
Shepard vs. Winston-Salem
Ohio Dominican vs. West Texas A&M
Bloomsburg vs. West Chester
Lenoir Rhyne vs. Carson-Newman
UNC-Pembroke vs. North Alabama

Comment: They sure play good football in Minnesota, (at least at this level). There are several teams with strong histories here: Northwest Missouri, Carson-Newman, North Alabama and Grand Valley State all have 30+ post season victories and multiple titles. Lenoir Rhyne and West Chester were big names back in the 50’s and 60’s when people started paying attention to small college football. Maybe they can make some noise now. West Texas used to be West Texas State, a major college team. St. Cloud, Pueblo, Shepard, Dominican, Bloomsburg and Pembroke don’t have much history but that doesn’t mean they aren’t writing it now. This is one division that will have a new champ. Last year’s winner, Valdosta State, will be watching it on TV.
