QUARTERFINAL results and SEMIFINAL match-ups
Unfortunately, both Wartburg and Frostburg lost so we won’t have an “Unglamorous Name Bowl”. They would have met in the semi-finals.
Wisconsin-Oshkosh, who seems to have taken over control of the Wisconsin Conference from Whitewater, who won 6 national championships between 2007-14, spoiled Wartburg’s (Iowa) dreams of glory, 41-27. The game was tied 20-20 midway through the 4th quarter but Dylan Hecker, who already had scored twice, went to work and ran for 3 touchdowns in a 12 minute stretch to salt the game away.
Titans advance to NCAA championship semifinal
Mount Union (Ohio) scraped away Frostburg State (Maryland) 70-37 in a game that wasn’t really that close. The Purple Raiders took a 21-0 first quarter lead. They pushed the lead to 28-3 with 3:55 left in the half before a wild finish that featured 6 touchdowns in that time, one on the final play of the half. When the dust settled, the home team still led 49-24. Three second half scores made it 70-24 before the visitors scored a couple of late TDs against the reserves.
Cox Sets Pair of Records in NCAA Quarterfinal Loss
Defending champion Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) downed perennial contender St. Thomas (Minnesota) 24-10, despite being thrown for a net 16 yards in rushing losses and being held to 143 yards overall. They also had more turnovers. They used a pick 6, a runt returned for a score and 65 yard kick off return that set up a field goal to advance to the semi-finals.
UMHB tops St. Thomas 24-10 in NCAA Quarterfinals
The State of New York put 9 teams in the D3 final from 1974-1991 but hasn’t had one since. Brockport State has a chance to get that far if they can get past the “Cru” (Mary Hardin-Baylor). They downed Delaware Valley, (Pennsylvania) 31-28, taking a 28-7 lead in the first three quarters and then surviving a run of three straight fourth quarter TDs to tie the game before winning it on a field goal on the last play of the game.
