The first round was played last weekend: 2016 Division III football schedule Click on “BX” for box score and “RC” for an article about the game. Here are the second round match-ups: Linfield (Ore) 9-1 (401-169) ranked #8 / defeated Hardin-Simmons 24-10 in the first round; lost to Mary Hardin-Baylor 27-66 / Post season record: 41-23 (4 championships) At Mary Hardin-Baylor (Tx) 11-0 (563-164) ranked #1 / defeated Redlands 50-28 in first round/ 28-14 (0) Wittenberg (Ohio) 10-1 (391-126) ranked #17 / defeated Thomas More 33-20 in first round; lost to Denison 21-24 / 22-15 (3) At Wisconsin-Whitewater 11-0 (405-168) ranked #2 / defeated Lakeland 45-27 in first round / 47-8 (6) Coe (Iowa) 11-0 (445-185) ranked #16 / defeated Monmouth 21-14 in the first round / 1-1 (0) at St. Thomas (Minn) 11-0 (526-120) ranked #3 / defeated Northwestern (Mn) 43-0 in first round / 17-9 (0) St. John's (Minn) 10-1 (468-138) ranked #9 / defeated Wisconsin-Platteville 32-31 in first round; lost to St. Thomas 21-33 / 42-21 (4) At Wisconsin-Oshkosh 10-1 (461-133) ranked #4 / defeated Washington (Mo.) 49-13; lost to Wisconsin-Whitewater 14-17 / 6-2 (0) Wheaton (Ill.) 10-1 (398-152) ranked #13 / defeated Huntingdon 45-10; lost to North Central 25-35 / 13-10 at North Central (Ill.) 11-0 (457-168) ranked #5 / defeated Rose-Hulman 41-7 / 12-9 (0) Wesley (Del) 9-2 (439-185) ranked #18 / defeated Stevenson 38-17 in the first round ; lost to Delaware Valley 14-21 and 28-42 to Christopher Newport / 28-12 (0) At John Carroll (Ohio) 10-1 (406-136) ranked #6 / defeated Olivet 37-12; lost to Wisconsin-Oshkosh 14-33 / 6-4 Mount Union (Ohio) 10-1 (530-118) ranked #7 / defeated Hobart 38-21 in the first round; lost to John Carroll 28-31 / 91-14 (12) At Johns Hopkins (Md) 11-0 (476-206) ranked #10 / defeated Randolph-Macon 42-21 in first round / 6-7 (0) Western New England (Ma) 11-0 (454-198) unranked / defeated Husson (Me) 44-27 in the first round / 1-2 (0) At Alfred (NY) 11-0 (409-218) ranked #14 / defeated Bridgewater State 33-27 in first round / 3-3 (0) Comments: Mount Union loses a single game by 28-31 to a 10-1 team and falls from #1 to #7? And they are Mount Union? And Whitewater is 11-0 and they aren’t ranked #1? Yup. Mary-Hardin Baylor has been a perennial contender and statistically it looks like they have their greatest team so maybe they’ve got it right. Can Linfield turn the tables on a team that beat them 27-66? The Wildcats beat the Crusaders, (or the Cru, as they call themselves) 28-21 for the 2004 DIII title, the last team other than Mount Union or Whitewater to win this championship. Is it time for somebody else to finally win this thing? I hope so. Rivalries are great but this event used to be about seeing new teams in the finals every year so you can see what some of those scores in the Sunday papers actually look like.
