Certainly Ithaca was a great program under butterfield from 76- to mid 90's? Butts had a great coaching staff duing that time. when i was there in mid 80's, he was really a CEO type, and the assts and position coaches did alot of the coaching. but Butts was a great motivator and speaker. i will never forget some of his pregame and fri. night speeches. Mike Welch is a good man and a coach, he was a position coach when i was there and was a great player under butterfield. i don't know many of the assistants though. i know alot of guys i played with were on butts staff before he left and alot did not stay around, or maybe welch let them go, i am not sure. back in the old days the NCAA tourney was only 8 teams, then it went to 16.. so you know those were good football teams that got in. now it is a bit diluted, and it shows in the 1st round mismatches they have now. Tough question on why Ithaca is not Ithaca. I think somethings migh have changed facility wise, even at the D3 level. I know that when SJF put in that huge sports complex there, they were very quickly very competitive in fball, and when Cortland put in the new facilties, they were competive quickly (when I played Cortland was pretty bad in football). We used to have alot of kids from Long Island and Massachusetts who were very good. I wonder with the increase in football commitment from schools like Union, UMASS, Stony Brook and Albany, even though that is 1AA, that keeps kids closer to home? we used to play UB, they were D3 then and we had alot of kids from western NY as well, but they went D1 and Buff State became competitive under IC QB and coach Jerry Boyes. Soi think it was just progams launching successfully and others catching up. I think Mt. Union still has their legendary coach. so maybe it is these great coaches. when i was in school Augustana beat us in stagg bowl. they had a great coach Reade? he was there for like 40 years and at that time won like 60 straight. but these great coaches can make a difference at the D3 level and 1AA level. I know IC is stepping up facilties, they just did a fundraiser to upgrade the football facilities. The new A&E, which is amazing! does not have football specific stuff in it. they are keeping most football stuff at cerache center, which is outdated. south hill field, or butterfield stadium is beautiful. My mother used to come to games and sit and stare into Cayuga lake all afternoon. But the cerache facilities part of that needs work. I know i was all over the place, but maybe some insight in there!!! thx for asking.
