FINALS CLASS AA My Alma Mater, Cicero-North Syracuse, shocked the world, (or at least Section III) by first beating Liverpool, who had beaten them 0-10 in the regular season and led them 7-28 at halftime of the playoff game, 35-28 and then beating Utica Proctor, who had beaten them 0-32 during the regular season, by 28-25 to win their third straight sectional title. The first two titles were won by dominant team that blew everybody away. This one was a Cinderella team who stumbled through a 4-3 regular season and seemed on their way to 4-4 when the miracle rally against Liverpool catapulted them into the title game. Late touchdown pass secures 3rd straight Class AA championship for C-NS In a strange rethinking of the state playoffs, both the Class AA and Class A finalists will advance to the State playoffs. The NorthStars will play the Section AA champion, (as would normally happen) Corning while Proctor will play the Section 1 champions, New Rochelle. I’m told the reason for this new format is a lack of schools in each class, which, it would seem to me, would be an excellent reason to recombine the two classes into a single Class A. Historically the teams in Classes AA and A have played each other as rivals for years. Section 3 Class A runner-up won the state Class AA title in 2006. Class A champion lost to Utica Proctor 7-12 in the only close game Proctor had until CNS beat them. The lines of the two teams as they go into the states: Cicero-North Syracuse 7-3 (225-181) NYSSWA HM MaxPreps 101/4876 PS- #34 Titles: 2 Lost to: Liverpool 0-10, RFA 27-34, Utica Proctor 0-32 Utica Proctor 9-1 (371-152) NYSSWA #16 MaxPreps 10/1314 PS- #1 Titles: 0 Lost to: Cicero-North Syracuse 25-28 CLASS A There was no miracle comeback for Auburn this week as Carthage conquered the Marron 55-7. They returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and never looked back, scoring the game’s first 27 points. Ahead 27-7 at half time and remembering what happened to Indian River the week before, the Comets rolled to a 28-0 second half, leaving no doubt that they are one of the great Class A teams we have had. Here are their lines going into the states: Carthage 9-1 (459-149) NYSSWA #5 MaxPreps 12/1344 PS- #1 Titles: 3 Lost to: Utica Proctor 7-12 Auburn 7-3 (354-327) NYSSWA #25 MaxPreps 89/3284 PS- #3 Titles: 5 Lost to: Indian River 20-53, Carthage 17-49 and 7-55 CLASS B Solvay, known more for their offense, won a defensive battle against Oneida, known more for their defense, to win the Class B title, 14-7. Solvay hunkers down to win first sectional football title in 17 seasons The old, simple state playoff format remains from the teams below Class A: Solvay will play Section 4 championship vestal in the quarter-finals next week. This is their line going into the states: Solvay 10-0 (433-213) NYSSWA #6 MaxPreps 62/3504 PS- #1 Titles: 3 CLASS C Carthage is really good but the most dominant team in the section is probably Lowville, who went through two apparently formidable opponents in the semi-finals and finals as if they weren’t even there. Canastota came in at 7-1 (406-119) and found themselves down 0-36 at the half, losing 15-49. Cato-Meridian was 9-0 (337-54) but it didn’t matter in a 6-41 loss to the Red Raiders. Lowville runs over Cato-Meridian in Section III Class C football final Lowville will meet Section 4 champion Susquehanna Valley in the state quarterfinals. Here is their line: Lowville 10-0 (511-138) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 15/1563 PS- #1 Titles: 4 CLASS D The survivor of the four two loss teams in the semis of this class is Frankfort Schuyler, who downed Waterville 22-6, avenging a 0-20 regular season loss. That means they will be fed into the wood-chipper known as Tioga, the #1 ranked Class D team in the state, who has beaten 7 Section 3 Class D champs in this decade by a combined 350-118.
