CLASS AA CBA turned the tide in the fourth quarter to down CNS 27-14. Sirvocea Dennis improvised a touchdown pass from a designed running play to break a 14-14 fourth quarter tie after the Northstars had rallied from a 0-14 to tie the game. Canastota’s problem was fumblitis- 7 turnovers. General Brown couldn’t punch it in in three trips inside the Red Raider 10 yard line. Maybe defense does win championships. An 85 yard sack-fumble return by linebacker Akim Betsey sealed the deal on a 34-14 win. Lowville was the one not expected to be here but proved their mettle, beating the supposed top two Class C teams in the section, Canastota and General Brown, by a combined 49-13. And General Brown was the #1 ranked team in the state. - Cazenovia lost one game by one point and seemed on a mission after that. When they won the state title last year, it was convenient that Chenango Forks and Maine Endwell of Section 4 were in classifications C and A respectively. This year they both moved into Class B. Forks won the Section 4 title and will be favored to end the Lakers run, something that might provide Caz with a little extra motivation. It was a decade ago but Cazenovia lost in the Class B playoffs to Forks twice in 2006-07, by a combined score of 7-15. This game figures to be as competitive, if somewhat higher scoring. - Whitesboro has been a power for years in Section III but has never been able to get much headway in the states. Is this the year they turn it around? - CBA has performed fairly well over the years but haven’t won the state title since that 2004 classic in the Dome against’ Ray Rice’s New Rochelle team. The brothers had a dynamic passing game that year with Greg Paulus getting national press throwing to Bruce Williams and Lavar Lobdell. The current Brothers have a top back and defender in Stevie Scott but I don’t think they are as dynamic as in the Paulus years. Similarly Onondaga has a very good team but I don’t really see a mike Hart or a Latavius Murray on their roster. I think you may need a special talent like that to go all the way at this level. Or maybe you can do it with defense, just like in the old days.
