QUARTERFINAL RESULTS

CLASS AA

Cicero-North Syracuse did the unthinkable: they obliterated the team representing the most consistently successful big-time school in the section, Christian Brothers Academy 61-7.

Corcoran also had a dominant performance, beating Utica Proctor, 45-19 after a 20-0 first period. They are a team the Northstars have yet to face and they appear to be the most formidable possible opponent in this section.

Baldwinsville won a squeaker over Fayetteville-Manlius 24-17, coming back from a 14-17 halftime deficit.

Liverpool, after having an off year, shocked Central Square, who was making their first playoff appearance in years, 26-22.

Semi-final match-ups:
1- Cicero-North Syracuse 8-0 (428-79) NYSSWA #6 MaxPreps 1/386 PS #1 Titles: none
4- Corcoran 7-1 (309-127) NYSSWA #28 MaxPreps 27/1548 PS #3 Titles: 6

3- Baldwinsville 7-1 (266-158) NYSSWA #21 MaxPreps 25/1537 PS #2 Titles: 4
7- Liverpool 4-4 (153-186) NYSSWA UR (unranked) MaxPreps 83/3377 PS- #8 Titles: 7

Comments: It remains to be if anyone can stand up to the Northstars but it appears they will have to face a 7-1 team they haven’t beaten yet and then probably an 8-1 team that hung with them for a half to prove themselves and make it into the state playoffs.

Regular Season results:
CNS has beaten Liverpool 41-0 and Baldwinsville 67-31
Baldwinsville beat Liverpool 35-7

CLASS A

There was no quarterfinal round but the teams played an 8th regular season game and these were the results involving teams that will be in the semi-finals:

A Whitesboro team that has been battling injuries took it to previously undefeated Indian River 41-20, making it clear that their version of the Warriors, (both team’s nickname), will again be a force in the playoffs. David Camerotta scored 5 touchdowns. Coach Tom Schoen won his 272nd game in 44 years and became Section III’s all-time winningest head football coach.

East Syracuse-Minoa beat Carthage 35-28, to eliminate the Comets from the post-season. Ny'Zhier Jefferson scored three times to lead the Spartans to their 5th straight victory.

Jamesville-DeWitt had a hard time with 1-7 Watertown but survived 36-26, after falling behind at halftime, 14-19.

The Semi-Final bracket:

1- Indian River 7-1 (332-143) NYSSWA #22 MaxPreps 140/4839 PS- #4 Titles: 2
4- Jamesville-Dewitt 5-3 (151-146) NYSSWA HM (unranked) MaxPreps 245/7477 PS- #9 Titles: 4

3- East Syracuse-Minoa 6-2 (272-144) NYSSWA HM (unranked) MaxPreps 229/7160 PS- #6 Titles: 2
2- Whitesboro 5-3 (263-153) NYSSWA HM MaxPreps 206/6595 PS- #5 Titles: 9

Comments: Indian Rivers looked to be easily the best team in this class until they got smashed by a rejuvenated Whitesboro team. Now it's anybody's ballgame.

In the regular season:
Whitesboro best Indian River 41-20 and J-D 33-0
Indian River beat J-D 6-0
JD 26 beat ESM 20
ESM beat Whitesboro 27-26

Class AA had a team with a losing record in its bracket and the Class A brackets were cut from 8 to 4 teams because of the lack of teams in that classification. If Classes AA and A were together in one class an 8 team playoff might have included CNS, Corcoran, Baldwinsville Central Square, Indian River, East Syracuse Minoa, CBA, and probably Whitesboro. Those schools were considered on the same level for decades before the current divisions were set up and played each other many times. I think they would be good games and there wouldn’t any losing teams in the playoffs.

CLASS B

Cazenovia demolished Westhill 61-18. The Lakers led 42-0 at halftime.

Mica Likemele ran for 302 yards and passed for 127 more to lead Marcellus past the Utica Notre Dame Jugglers, (my favorite team nickname), 43-30.

VVS shut out Chittenango 27-0, getting two fourth quarter scores to salt the defensive duel away.

Homer beat Mexico 42-18 to keep their record spotless. John Horner III rushed for 270 yards and 3 scores.

Semi-Final preview:

1- Cazenovia 8-0 (313-95) NYSSWA #5 MaxPreps 62/2881 PS #2 Titles: 11
4- Marcellus 7-1 (197-115) NYSSWA #23 MaxPreps 155/5186 PS #9 Titles: none

3- Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 7-1 (226-71) NYSSWA #16 MaxPreps 99/3889 PS #8 8Titles: 2
2- Homer 8-0 (318-79) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 57/2651 PS #1 Titles: 4

Comments: This one seems all about perennial powerhouse Cazenovia and Homer, although VVS and Marcellus look good enough to make some noise.

Regular Season Results:
Cazenovia beat VVS 19-7
Homer beat Marcellus 35-12 and Chittenango 35-14
Marcellus beat Westhill 13-6 and Chittenango 15-10
Chittenango beat Westhill 21-13

CLASS C

The Class C powers had a tough time against their first round opponents. General Brown was tied with “Southern Hills”, (a hybrid of Lafayette, Tully and Fabius-Pompey), 26-26 before they closed the game out with three late scores, 47-26. They scored on big plays: 85, 54 and 66 yards.

Sherburne-Earlville rode three rushing touchdowns by Vince Albertina to a 31-19 win over Jordan Elbridge. A 16-0 third quarter was the key.

Canastota had been rolling over everybody but Thousand Islands proved to be a tough, gritty customer before being subdued 14-7.

Pat Hackler threw for 7 touchdowns as Skaneateles romped over Little Falls 48-6. They led 28-0 at the half.

Semi-Final preview:

1- General Brown 8-0 (427-109) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 151/5011 PS #3 Titles: 6
5- Sherburne-Earlville 6-2 (245-165) NYSSWA HM MaxPreps 248/7522 PS unranked Titles: none

3- Canastota 8-0 (393-45) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 117/4436 PS #4 Titles: none
2- Skaneateles 8-1 (408-114) NYSSWA #8 MaxPreps 145/4880 PS #5 Titles: 2

Comments: Three powerhouses and one pretty good team. Whoever emerges from this will be battle-tested.

Regular Season Results:
Canastota beat Sherburne-Earlville 34-19

CLASS D
Ten years after winning the State Class C title, the Gaelic Knights of Bishop Ludden burst out of the gate with a 35-0 first quarter and coasted to a 49-21 win over Waterville.

Sauquoit Valley scored 12 fourth quarter points to overcome Mount Markham, (yes, the valley defeated the mountain).

Onondaga crushed Beaver River 52-6. They returned three interceptions for touchdowns and led 38-0 at the half.

Dolgeville overwhelmed Joe Benedick and Sandy Creek 62-26 as three players rushed for over 100 yards. Benedict, who set the state single game rushing record last year, closed out his fabulous career with 369 yards and 4 TDs. The Comets rushed for 430 yards but only passed for 9. The Blue Devils rushed for 628 yards and passed for 204 more for a total of 832 yards total offense!

Semi-Final Preview

1- Bishop Ludden 8-0 (315-142) NYSSWA #9 MaxPreps183/6080 PS #6 Titles: 2
4- Sauquoit Valley 6-2 (212-209) NYSSWA #19 MaxPreps 320/9138 PS unranked Titles: 1

6- Onondaga 7-1 (290-50) NYSSWA #12 MaxPreps 187/6120 PS #10 Titles: 7
2- Dolgeville 8-0 (416-161) NYSSWA #6 MaxPreps 88/3520 PS #7 Titles: 16

Comments: Dolgeville’s offense vs. Onondaga’s defense should be a good second round match-up. The winner would figure to take on Bishop Ludden, who won the state in Class C a decade ago.

Regular Season Results:
Bishop Ludden beat Onondaga 12-6.

There were three teams with losing records in the Class B-D brackets and one with an even record. Of the dozen quarter final games, half were won by at least four touchdowns and eight winning teams had 40 or more points. An 8 team tournament of the best teams in these three classes might have included Cazenovia, Homer, General Brown, Canastota, Bishop Ludden, Dolgeville and two of VVS, Marcellus, Skaneateles, Thousand Islands, Mount Markham or Onondaga, (I would prefer Skaneateles and Onondaga)
