Here is what happened over the weekend in the Section III playoffs, as well as the match-ups for the games in the Dome this weekend:
CLASS AA
Powerful Henninger needed a blocked punt and recovered fumble on a high snap to subdue pesky Auburn 22-8. That and an “uncensored defense”. “Henninger defensive lineman Savon Smith calls it "uncensored defense."
Fellow defensive lineman Jafonta Johnson explains it this way: "We play raw and uncut. We get down to the grind and grit." (Syracuse.com)
Liverpool used their defense to censor Baldwinsville, 7-0 in the other semi-final. The Warriors themselves didn’t score until Jaydakis Scott ran it in from 7 yards out with 7 minutes, 17 seconds left in the game, (7’s up!). It set up a battle of unbeatens for the big-boy crown. They’ll both be playing some big-boy defense.

Indian River ground out a win in another defensive battle with Carthage, 13-6 behind 300 yards rushing. They scored all their points in the second half after being down 0-6 at halftime. Connor Brown, who gained 78 yards on 13 carries, scored on a one yard plunge to give the Warriors the lead and Romel Washington added an insurance score along with 73 yards on 6 carries.
East Syracuse-Minoa, who had started the season 0-2, surprised perennial power Whitesboro 38-35. The Warriors built up a seemingly insurmountable 35-10 halftime lead only to see the Spartans top that with a 28-0 second half. “There wasn’t any screaming or yelling at halftime,” head coach Kevin DeParde said. “We just told the kids to calm down and play ESM football in the second half.” (Syracuse.com)The Spartans rushed for 252 yards and got scoring passes of 86 and 54 yards from quarterback Jake Rodman to DeShaun Gorman and Brandon Santillo. “We knew the defense was getting tired,” Othman said. “They were getting soft and didn’t want to tackle us. We just kept grinding and pounding; it’s what we do. From there we knew we had them.” The Spartans lost to Indian River during the season 21-41 but their tide seems to rising while the Warriors might be waning just a little. But they better show up for the first half this time.

Cazenovia pulled away from a 14-14 tie to down Westhill, 34-17. Jake Wozniak fumbled after the opening kickoff of the second half but made up for it by making a tipped pass interception at the goal line. Westhill led 17-14 late in the third quarter, then I don’t know what does.” (Syracuse.com). Laker quarterback Keaton Ackermann lofted a long pass that Jake Schaffner tipped to himself and then caught flat on his back. Ackermann then hit TJ Connelan with a 41 yard pass to take the lead. Later Connelan ran 11 yards for another score and Ackerman ran 41 yards for the clincher. “Our kids realized that we were in a heck of a ballgame,” Coach TomNeidl said. “We just challenged them to man up and dig a little bit deeper, play a little bit harder. Much like the Lakers, Homer had not been challenged all season, (their closest game was 47-13 over Westhill, Caz’s 27-0 over Holland Patent) but passed their first close-game test in the semi-finals, Their game with Oneida was also 14-14 at the half. Alec Bush opened the second half with a 65 yard touchdown run. Oneida responded with a long scoring drive to tie it again. “Then, Bush and the Trojans offensive line put the game away by displaying textbook power football. To start the fourth quarter, Homer called eight straight runs before quarterback Drew Cottrell found a wide-open Jayden Gavidia in the back of the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown, which all put took the wind out of the Indians sails.” (Syracuse.com) After a turnover, Bush scored again. “With one last gasp, the Indians nearly broke a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, but Nish fumbled the ball near midfield, slashing any hope that Oneida had left.” A late field goal salted it away. Bush rushed for 360 yard ds and four scores on 36 carries. He’s #1 in New York State with 2039 yards rushing on only 173 carries, (11.8) and leads in touchdowns, (31) and points (86).

Herkimer topped stubborn Jordan Elbridge, 42-26 behind quarterback- yes quarterback! - Mitchell
Scherer, who carried 39 times for 346 yards and 5 touchdowns. He was also 7 for 7 passing for 35 yards and his team’s other score. The Magicians jumped off to 14-0 first quarter lead but the Eagles closed it to 26-21 by the fourth quarter. Syracuse.com: The Magicians orchestrated a variation of shotgun formation plays that ran the quarterback in the teeth of the defensive line. This ate away at the clock.
“It’s like that play on Madden, they just keep on using it,” Barrigar said. Ultimately Herkimer won the game by 42-27 because the game-plan of running the ball up the middle. “The middle, that’s what we exploited,” Scherer said. “The middle was wide open so we just pushed everybody forward and it opens up.” SU could have used Herkmier’s line vs. NC State.
Kevin Warmach set a Section III record by scoring 8 touchdowns for Utica-Notre Dame in a wild 52-40 over General Brown. (The old record was Dorsey Levens’.) He ran 46 yards for his team’s first score. He returned a kick-off 74 yards for another score. Runs from scrimmage of 2 and 51 yards gave the Jugglers a 17 point lead at 24-7. But the Lions closed it to 24-21 by the half. Another 2 yarder and a two point conversion made it 32-21 but the Lions scored again on a 53 yard reverse by Richard Dawkins. The teams continued to trade big plays until “Warmack eventually saved one of his best runs for the deciding blow. With 2:52 left in the game, he ran a left sweep and somehow evaded a mosh pit of Lions to cut back to the right and bolt 40 yards down the right side. “ (Syracuse.com). The game ended with two General Brown passes being batted down in the end zone. Warmach rushed for 405 yards. Now it will be Warmach vs. Scherer in the final.

Cato-Meridian’s Blue Devils seemed to be doing well against Dolgeville’s Blue devils, emerging from the fourth quarter with a 13-8 lead. But Dolgeville then buried them under 34 unanswered points and went on to a 50-19 victory. Halfback Johann Doerrer keyed the winning Blue Devils by running for 105 yards and two score as well as throwing a halfback option pass 27 yards for a third, all in the 34 point run.
Sandy Creek ended the season of Morrisville-Eaton and Hamilton, (all three of them) 35-10. “Cameron Hall rushed for 149 yards on 20 carries and one touchdown. Fullback Jared Baird rambled for two short TDs as the Comets (8-1) put the game out of reach.” (Syracuse.com)
