SECOND ROUND CLASS AA CBA crushed Utica Proctor38-14 behind 204 yards rushing and 4TDs from Stevie Scott and a big fourth down conversion that Andre Dowdell had to wait 30 minutes to attempt: http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/news/article/7542024349579482518/fourth-down-play-by-dowdell-breaks-proctor-propels-cba-into-class-aa-championship-game/ Coming back from an injury, Jaydakis Scott topped Stevie, (no relation, apparently) with 243 yards and 4TDs as Liverpool handled arch-rival Baldwinsville 43-23 to set up an anticipated rematch with the Brothers in the Carrier Dome: http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/news/article/6542022349690482842/jaydakis-scott-is-back-rushes-for-243-yards-and-four-touchdowns-in-liverpool-blowout/ Championship game match-up: 1-Christian Brothers Academy 8-1 (404-134) NYSSWA #12 MaxPreps 6/664 PS#1 10 titles 3- Liverpool 8-1 (362-96) NYSSWA #17 MaxPreps 12/976 PS #2 6 titles CBA beat Liverpool 28-17 during the regular season. They are 8-0 (384-101) since losing to #1 state-ranked Aquinas of Rochester 20-33 in their opener. Both teams can defend and score but Liverpool is somewhat better on defense and the Brothers have generated a few more points. Early on the Warriors looked like the section’s best team but the Brothers beat them in their own place to change that perception. Who will win the battle of the Scotts- Stevie vs. Jadakis? These teams had three common opponents, besides each other: They beat RFA, 44-24 and 45-6, respectively. They both had no problem with Nottingham: 57-0 and 31-0. They both crushed West Genesee, (whatever happened to the Wildcats: 2007 state champs?), 65-14 and 67-0. CLASS A The Spartans of ESM overpowered Fulton 34-15 as Jerry Perry carried the ball 11 straight times at one point and wound up with gained 196 yards on 25 carries and scored two touchdowns. His teammate Greg Buck almost exactly matched that, carrying 23 times for 191 yards and a pair of TDs: http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/news/article/7542025349579482530/east-syracuse-minoa-powers-its-way-past-fulton-in-class-a-football-semifinal/ But it will be hard to overpower perennial power Whitesboro, who again dominated defending state champions Indian River, 33-8: http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/news/article/6542022349684482857/big-plays-solid-defense-fuel-whitesboros-win-over-indian-river/ Championship game match-up: 1- East Syracuse-Minoa 8-1 (378-196) NYSSWA #12 MaxPreps 97/4394 PS #3 2 titles 2- Whitesboro 8-1 (309-93) NYSSWA #15 MaxPreps 53/2704 PS #5 7 titles These teams didn’t play during the regular season. ESM’s Spartans beat the warriors in a wild 38-35 game in last year’s semi-finals before losing to eventual state champ Indian River in the finals. The Warriors easily dispensed with a rebuilding IR team in this year’s semis and they have really come on strong, going 8-0 (299-79) since losing to Class AA Utica Proctor 10-14 in their opener. But so have the Spartans who lost to AA’s -M 33-38 to start out and are 8-0 (315-158) after that. Again, it’s a battle of a strong offensive team with a good defense against a strong defensive team that can score, too. Interesting that Max Preps thinks so much more of Whitesboro than ESM, yet the local paper and the State sportswriters rank the Spartans ahead of them. These teams were not in the same Division but there were so few Class A teams that they had five common opponents and played one each twice: ESM beat New Hartford 52-34, Fowler 52-30, Fulton 35-18 and 34-15, Carthage 51-20 and Watertown 34-20. Whitesboro beat New Hartford 14-13, Fowler 63-8 and 54-6, Fulton 31-20, Carthage 18-13 and Watertown 35-6. So take your pick in this one. CLASS B Time will tell if they are really the best in the state but Cazenovia is surely the best Class B team in the section as Chittenango found out in losing to the Lakers 47-6: http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/news/article/6542014349575482594/cazenovia-trounces-chittenago-47-6-advances-to-class-b-finals/ Caz’s supposed main challenger got upset by VVS, 10-17, who scored two foruth quarter touchdowns to clinch the game: http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/news/article/6542014349574482606/vernon-verona-sherrill-advances-to-class-b-final-with-17-10-win-over-homer/ Championship game match-up: 1-Cazenovia 9-0 (371-58) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 13/1015 PS #1 9 titles 3- Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 7-2 (185-191) NYSSWA 17 MaxPreps 91/4073 PS # 4 2 titles Cazenovia beat VVS 42-12 during the regular season. No team has gotten within 19 points of them this year so expect more of the same. These teams are in the same division, (Class B East) and played similar schedules. They each played Mexico, South Jefferson, Oneida, Camden and Central Valley Academy and defeated all of them, VVS by a combined 116-90 and Caz by 193-34. Then we’ll see how they do against teams from other sections in the one class in which we’ve never won a state title. Interesting that max Preps would favor the Lakers against wither ESM or Whitesboro, the Class A finalists, and just behind Liverpool of Class AA. They catch two breaks: Maine Endwell, the four time defending state champs and winners of an incredible 60 games in a row have been moved back to Class A and Chenango Forks, Section III’s perennial nemesis, is still down in Class C. So the way may be clear to have something special happen in Class B for Section III and the Lakers – at last! CLASS C Utica Notre Dame handled perennial power General Brown, 41-22, behind 4TDs from Jerome Brabham, including a 40 yard pass play and a 90 yard run: http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/news/article/7542021349565482542/jerome-brabhams-4-tds-leads-notre-dame-back-to-class-c-final/ But Canastota has snuck up on people and put up an impressive record of their own. The advanced by beating Holland-Patent 26-7 as Ryan Zophy passed for two scores and ran for another: http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/news/article/7542021349570482527/zophy-to-zupan-puts-canastota-in-class-c-sectional-final/ Championship game match-up: 1-Utica-Notre Dame 8-1 (379-136) NYSSWA #9 MaxPreps 33/1987 PS #2 6 titles 2- Canastota 8-1 (354-118) NYSSWA #12 MaxPreps 49/2621 PS #3 0 titles These teams didn’t play during the regular season. Both lost their openers and are 8-0 since. UND lost to Section 4’s Newark Valley, 14-32. NV is playing Chenango Forks for the Sec 4 Class C title this week. The Jugglers have outscored their opposition 365-104 since. Canastota has snuck up on people since losing their opener to Herkimer 12-20: They are 342-98 since, including a 58-29 revenge over the Magicians. The Jugglers also beat Herkimer 28-8. Holland Patent also played both teams, losing 6-42 to UND and 7-26 to Canastota. Sherburne-=Earlville also lost to both 21-61 to UND and 14-28 to the Red Raiders. CLASS D Sandy Creek again beat Onondaga and by almost the same score, 22-8, (vs. 20-7). But overcame a 0-8 halftime deficit to do so: http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/news/article/7542025349585482517/big-second-half-leads-sandy-creek-back-to-class-d-final/ They will face West Canada Valley, Section III’s first ever stat champion, (1997), who beat perennial power Dolgeville, (the sections second ever state champion in 1999), 28-8: http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/news/article/7542025349584482520/josh-chapins-3-tds-lead-west-canada-valley-to-class-d-final/ 1-Sandy Creek 7-2 (280-153) NYSSWA #10 MaxPreps 232/7642 PS #6 1 title 2- West Canada Valley 7-2 (194-125) NYSSWA #14 MaxPreps 327/9539 PS #7 1 title Sandy Creek, who has won 7 in a row after an 0-2 start, beat WCV 40-14 during the regular season. They should be able to beat them again. They have no other common opponents.
