FIRST ROUND

CLASS AA

CBA crushed another overmatched opponent, beating Auburn 42-14. Fayette-Manlius held off Cinderella Central Square 28-21. I still think they are very vulnerable and are not convinced that they will have a show-down with the brothers. Henninger, who came back to beat Baldwinsville 26-20 after losing to them 7-10 during the season, could be the team to knock the Hornets off. Liverpool looked awfully good in shutting out West Genesee 28-0 and they could give CBA some problems but I still think the Brothers are the best AA team to come out of Section III in years and will make a run at the state title after winning this one.

-M held off Central Square, who runs a Georgia Tech-style option by holding on downs, forcing a fumble and interception a pass in their own territory on the Red Hawk’s last three possessions. Josh Smith ran for 147 yards and a score and John Vincentini gained 102, including touchdown runs of 34 and 348 yards for the losers. For the Hornets it was the “Jakes”: Pulver who ran for 118 yards and 3 scores and Wettig who ran for 86 yards and a score and completed 13 of 16 passes for 150 yards. CBA bolted to a 35-0 halftime lead and added another score in the third period before giving up two late scores to make it a little more respectable. J. R. Zazzara and DeShawn Slater both scored twice. Zazzara passed for 285 yards. Jack Burgmaster scored both of Auburn’s Touchdowns. Auburn had lost by only a point, 34-35 to -M. CBA is ranked #2 in the state, behind Section 5’s Rochester Acquinas. Henninger overcame deficits of 0-13 and 13-20 to beat Baldwinsville. Justin McGann rushed for 161 yards and made a fingertip catch of the game winner in overtime. Rickie Sparks rushed for 150 yards and a score for the Bees. Jaydakis Scott ran for 97 yards and 2 scores for Liverpool.

The next round:
#1 Fayetteville-Manlius 8-0 (372-235, NYSSWA # 8, PS #2, MP 29/2074 2 section titles)
Vs. #4 Henninger 6-2 (218-118, PS#3, MP 26/1984, 6 section titles)
#2 Christian Brothers Academy 8-0 (361-100, NYSSWA #2, PS #1 Max Preps 5/815, 9 section, 1 state titles)
Vs. #3 Liverpool 6-2 (221-130, PS#5, MP 39/2395, 6 section titles)
Comment: I think both Henninger and Liverpool might be better than -M and don’t expect to see the long awaited confrontation between the Hornets and CBA, who is better than all of them anyway.

CLASS A

Indian River rolled over Fulton 44-17. I’m surprised it was that close. East Syracuse-Minoa is coming on really strong, crushing their old nemesis, New Hartford, 50-14. Carthage had no trouble with Nottingham, who sued to be good, 42-6. Jamesville-Dewitt shut out perennial power Whitesboro 14-0. The Warriors got off to a snake-bit start but had ended the season with a three game winning streak. All were impressive wins and this class seems wide open right now.

Dustin Sharrit ran for 155 yards on only 10 carries, three of them for scores, for Indian River. Rasheed Baker ran for 117 tough yards on 32 carries and scored on two 1 yard runs for J-D. Josh Capers led the way for Carthage with 133 yards rushing and 3 scores. Five players scored 6 touchdowns for ESM.

The next round:
#1 Indian River 7-1 (261-104, NYSSWA #15, PS #4, MP 70/3481, 1 section 3 title)
Vs. #4 Jamesville-Dewitt 6-2 (167-87, PS #8 MP 141/5581, 4 section titles) IR beat J-D 23-7 on 9/12.
#2 East Syracuse-Minoa 7-1 (277-137, NYSSWA #16, PS #6, MP 93/4252, 2 section titles)
Vs. #3 Carthage 7-1 (246-131, NYSSWA #24, PS #7, MP 116/4965, 2 section titles)
Comment: Indian River is very good but they could have quite a challenge with ESM who is starting to look as good as they did a couple of years ago, when they rolled to the title, including a 23 point win over IR. Both teams are undefeated in Section 3, having lost early games to Section 2 opponents.

CLASS B

Homer swept by Camden 41-14 while Oneida blanked Westhill 37-0, setting up a great semi-final with Cazenovia, who swamped Cortland 43-0 likely waiting in the finals after they take care of Marcellus, who got by VVS, 14-6.

Homer blew out to a 28-0 halftime lead behind Chris Brown, who caught a 42 yard touchdown pass and then ran 42 yards for another score. Cazenovia had an even easier time of it with a 34-0 halftime lead. Dan Phillips ran for three touchdowns. He even did the kick-offs. Dylan Cafalone ran for two scores for Oneida. Tom Keegan hit Will Coon for a 43 yard score to open the second half for Marcellus. But it was their defense, which forced four turnovers that really won the game for them.

The next round:
#1 Homer 8-0 (319-107, NYSSWA #7, PS #2, MP 51/2713, 3 section titles)
Vs. #4 Oneida 7-1 (254-88, NYSSWA #11, PS #4, MP 57/2918, 3 section titles )
#2 Cazenovia 8-0 (322-106, NYSSWA #4, PS #1, MP 20/1719, 8 section titles)
Vs. #3 Marcellus 5-3 (271-228, MP 122/5298, no section titles) Caz beat Marcellus 43-35 on 9/19.
Comment: I don’t think Cazenovia will have as much trouble with Marcellus this time, (MaxPreps rates them above every team in the section except CBA). Homer-Oneida will be a heck of a game, as will the final.

CLASS C

Bonfire of the vanities: #1 ITSC went down to Utica Notre Dame 28-32 and #2 Sherburne-Earlville was upended by Thousand Islands 12-23. Two 7-0 teams went down to two 4-3 teams. No such problems for #3 seed Watertown Immaculate Heart, who used their pure hearts to dominate impure Skaneateles, 49-7. They are now the heavy favorites to win this classification but who knows after this weekend? Besides the two upset teams they have to worry about perennial power General Brown, who survived against Frankfort-Schuyler 14-12.

The game of the week was Notre Dame’s upset of ITSC and the performance of the week was Kevin Womack’s with 281 yards rushing and 3 TDs. But the key even in the citing game was a grinding 80 yard non-scoring drive that ran out the clock. Coach Byron Abraham said “That is the kind of thing that wins football games”. Zach Pitre scored on two 1 yard plunges to give General Brown a 14-6 lead. Then the Lions survived a 77 yard pass play from Joe DeSarro to Rich Morocco and a failed two point conversion to advance. Skaneateles has dominated Class C in Section III but that’s over as Watertown rolled to an easy win. Nick Koelmel caught two 65 yard touchdown passes and returned an interception 57 yards for another score. Sherburne-Earlville was the victim of four turnovers, two of which led to scoring runs by Tavis Anderson. Miles Kearns returned the third, an interception, 60 yards to make it 21-0 and the Marauders could not overcome the deficit.

The next round:
#3 Watertown Immaculate Heart 8-0 (295-59, NYSSWA #12, PS #3, MP 62/3167, 1 section title)
Vs. #7 Thousand Islands 5-3 (170-164, MP 222/7138, no section titles) WIHC beat TI 26-0 on 9/6.
#5 General Brown 7-1 (248-109, NYSSWA #14, PS #5, MP 87/4080, 5 section titles)
Vs. #8 Notre Dame of Utica 5-3 (283-222, PS #10MP 244/7546 5 section titles)
Comment: I see a rematch of perhaps the best regular season game in the section when Watertown IHC beat General Brown 28-26 on October 18 for the Lions’ only loss.

CLASS D

#1 Weedsport was another upset victim but they had to wonder why perennial power Dolgeville was seeded #8 with a 6-1 record. The Blue Devils eliminated the Warriors by 27-20. Westmoreland rolled over Cato-Meridian 40-19. Herkimer crushed Tully 48-14. Defending champ Sandy Creek rose up and beat West Canada Valley 34-14. This is another wide-open class: Everybody’s 7-1!

Dolgeville beat Weedsport in a back and fourth game that in which neither team scored twice in a row. Jason Nastowski scored twice for the Blue Devils, who have won more Section 3 titles than any other team. Sandy Creek fell behind 0-15 and then scored 34 straight points on five touchdowns by five different players. Austin Mills ran for four touchdowns and passed for another as Herkimer broke a 14 all tie with 34 unanswered points of their own. Tim Harrison scored four times, three runs and a 53 yard pass, and Westmoreland won thanks to a 21-0 second period. He had 170 yard son only 12 carries.

The next round:
#2 Westmoreland 7-1 (356-155, NYSSWA #8, PS #6, MP 131/5412, 6 section titles)
Vs. #3 Herkimer 7-1 (301-65, NYSSWA #12, PS #9, MP 165/5935, 4 section titles)
#5 Sandy Creek 7-1 (332-87, NYSSWA #10, PS #7, MP 107/4707, 1 section title)
Vs. #8 Dolgeville 7-1 (265-131, NYSSWA #15 MP 118/4979, PS #8, 15 section and 1 state titles)
Comment: Wow! This is the most evenly matched classification. I could literally see any of these teams winning it and none of the games would really be an upset. A round-robin would be fun but there’s no time for it.

The folks who vote in the PS rankings thought the same thing about Dolgeville's seeding. One guy called the seeding "pathetic"
