SEMI-FINALS Class AA For the third straight year, my alma mater, Cicero-North Syracuse lost in the state semi-finals. This time they did it in a rebuilding year, which offers hope for the future. All three losses have bene competitive against teams from Sections 5 and 6, which are very strong at the top level. Two years ago they lost to Section 6’s Lancaster, who returned the opening kick-off for a touchdown and got a pick six on the last play, 21-35. Last year they lost to Seciton 5’s Aquinas Insitute, who has won more state titles than anyone, 21-28. This time they lost a back and fourth game to Section 5’s McQuaid Jesuit, 28-42. The teams basically alternated scores except that McQuaid scored on their last possession of the first half and the first possession of the second half: Cicero-North Syracuse falls to McQuaid in state football semifinal New Rochelle’s Tariq Benjamin three two fourth quarter touchdown passes, despite playing on a bad ankle, (Imagine that!), to lead his team to a 24-17 win over Shenendehowa to return to the state championship game for the 7th time and second in a row, (they lost to Aquinas in last year’s finals). But they won their first title once, too. Maybe this is McQuaid’s turn to start a legacy. Class A Carthage made it to it’s first ever state championship with a 16-6 victory over Canandaigua Academy. The Comets are thus the only Section 3 team to have a shot at a state championship this year. They’d been in the state tournament three times before, losing to Vestal in the quarterfinals in 1997, 20-27, beating Corning East 19-7 in 2007 but then losing to Aquinas 0-17 and getting clobbered by Union Endicott 7-43 in 2013. This is clearly their best team and their best chance at a state title. I could not find a non-subscription article on the game so I’ll with this video summary: Cornwall Football Routs Rye To Advance To State Championship 3 Carthage 11-1 (513-166) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 15/1449 States: 3-3 with 0 titles Lost to: Utica Proctor 7-12 Vs. 9 Cornwall Central 11-0 (428-194) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 14/1367 States: 12-13 with 1 title (defending state champs) Comment: This looks like a great match-up and could be a classic game. Class B Chenango Forks scored a late TD and captured its own onside kick to set up another score to break open a close game and beat Western New York Maritime Charter 41-20 to advance to their record 12th state title game, (which they’ve won 5 times). Class C In the biggest “oncoming trains” match-up of the semi-finals, defending state champs Susquehanna Valley overcame a 13-21 halftime deficit with two late scores, the winning one coming after a fumbled kick-off, beat Section 6’s Southwestern, 35-28. SV heading back to state final after big win over Southwestern Section 10’s Gouverneur defeated Section 1’s Valhalla 14-11 to become Susquehanna Valley’s next challenger. They may have a shot, having given up only 87 points in 11 games. High school football: Gouverneur comes back to advance to state Class C championship 4 Susquehanna Valley 12-0 (551-120) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 10/1120 States: 5-1 with 1 title (defending state champs) Vs. 10 Gouverneur (beat 7 Saranac Lake 53-0) 11-0 (421-87) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 32/2567 States: 2-4 with 0 titles Comments: They say defense wins championships. If anyone is going to stop a juggernaut like Susquehanna Valley, it’s going to be a strong defensive team. Class D Defending state champion Clymer, (OK, Clymer Central/Sherman/Panama) came back from a 13-27 halftime deficit to beat #1 ranked Tioga 28-27. https://www.post-journal.com/news/latest-news/2019/11/clymer-sherman-panama-defeats-tioga-in-semifinal/ Maddox Balise ran for 305 yards and 5 TDs to lead Section 7’s Moriah to a 46-12 rout of Section 1’s Tuckahoe. HEADED TO THE DOME: Vikings take down Tuckahoe to punch ticket to state title game 6 Clymer Central/Sherman/Panama 10-1 (385-113) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 28/2351 States:7-4 with 1 title (defending state champs) Lost to: Franklinville/Ellicottville/West Valley Central 8-24 Vs. 7 Moriah 8-3 (340-173) NYSSWA #8 MaxPreps 147/6635 States: 10-14 with 0 titles Comments: Clymer is the obvious favorite but Moriah is pretty feisty. A section 7 team with 10 state tourney wins has to be taken seriously.
