FIRST ROUND
#1 ranked CARROLL COLLEGE of Montana and no trouble with #14 Valley City State of North Dakota, waltzing past them 49-0. Dustin Rinker ran for 153 yards and 3 scores as the Saints rushed for 305 yards and a 35-0 halftime lead.
#2 ranked and defending NAIA champion GRAND VIEW also had an easy time of it over #16 Langston, 38-3. The Vikings held the Lions to 149 yards total offense while gaining 325. They led 24-3 at halftime. Quarterback Derek Fulton ran for two scores and passed for a third.
#3 S. XAVIER had a much more difficult time subduing #17 Campbellsville 38-35. Campbellsville built up a 28-17 third quarter lead but the Cougars responded with three straight touchdowns. The Tiger scored with 7:56 left to make it 38-35 but were held in check in two more possessions. It was a game of big plays including a 95 yard touchdown pass from St. Xavier’s John Rhode to Stephen Simms that was answered with a 72 yard pass from Tajh Milliken to Demytreus Gipson. Rhode completed 30 of 50 passes for 416 yards and 3 touchdowns while Simms caught 8 balls for 210 yards and 2 scores.
#4 MORNINGSIDE was too much for #13 Ottawa, rolling to 644 yards total offense on their way to a 42-21. Ottawa scored first and the Mustangs stampeded to six unanswered touchdowns. Ryan Kasdorf threw for 248 yards and 3 TDs while Brandon Wegher ran for 188 yards and a score.
#5 MISSOURI VALLEY beat #12 Northwestern Iowa 20-17 in two overtimes. It was a defensive duel with the score being only 10-10 at the end of regulation with two scores having been set up by turnovers. The teams traded TDs in the first overtime but when a fourth down try at the MV one yard line resulted in an incomplete pass. Mo Valley then won it with a 35 yard field goal by Daniel Mouro. The Vikings out-gained the Red Raider 321-292.
#6 LINDSAY WILSON eat #11 Faulkner by the same score in regulation. The Blue Raiders were up 13-9 late in the game when “took a handoff from quarterback Branden Cresap, broke into the secondary and eluded Eagle defenders the rest of the way for the decisive 45-yard scoring play that pushed the advantage to 20-9 with only 4:25 to play.”. But “It took only two plays for the Eagles to climb back in, thanks mainly to a hook and ladder trick play executed to perfection. From the Faulkner 35, quarterback David Cochran passed to Keithon Redding, who lateraled it to a sprinting Gabe Chambers near the sideline. The senior speedster made it all the way to the Blue Raider 3, and three plays later Cochran found Jazeric Peterson in the end zone for the touchdown. Cochran and Peterson hooked up again for a two-point conversion, and with 3:12 left Faulkner was down only 20-17.” LW was able to run out the last 2:26 to preserve the victory.
#7 MARIAN easily beat #10 Georgetown of Kentucky, 34-3. “Tevin Lake rushed for two scores, Hayden Northern threw two TDs and the hosts had no difficulty ending the Tigers' season in first round of the NAIA playoffs. Marian (9-2) only outgained Georgetown by 52 yards (255-203), but forced six Tigers turnovers.” (Kentucky.com) The Tigers were held to 25 yards rushing and got sacked for 55 yards for s net of -30. Quarterback Neal Pawsat was intercepted four time by the Knight’s aggressive defense.
#8 Southern Oregon topped #9 Mid-America Nazarene 44-26. The Raiders pulled away from a 20-17 halftime lead Quarterback Austin Dodge threw for 311 yards with 3TD passes and set an NAIA career record for completions with 1,169. Sean Tow rushed for 124 yards. They outgained the Pioneers 540-342.
